Nope this is in the future. Of course all of them except for Knuckles and Sonic and Tikal design are Fan characters. Knuckles is from the tribe that Tikal was part of and there for the gene pool probably had many similar characteristics if any echidnas were to survive the tragedy that befell them (Sonic Chronicles mentions) The namesake of Tikal comes from her mother's side.
Archie comics and SEGA do not overlap well... unfortunately when the Archie used SEGA's Sonic characters many of them lost their original personalities and their character qualities changed... So I just stick with the original Sonic, the one from SEGA where Knuckles's father is unnamed and his family unmentioned.

Well we have no idea where most of the Sonic guys parents are. Jet has/had a father, Rouge's mom was mentioned. The only showed parent is Vanilla.

Yeah they had no real background story. Then again who really cares, they'll only put the relatives in if it has something to do with the plot. I mean physically in. They probably on did that with Vanilla so Cream would have a reason to go with Sonic and crew.
