Winter starts in late November so it's late
don't look at the callendary dates, it snowed here in september already, here autumn starts in august and winter starts in november
dec 21st is midwinter

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rydi1689 In reply to calleena [2008-12-03 16:51:28 +0000 UTC]

the fact that it snows doesn't mean it's winter Β·____Β·

...

I searched for info and I found this

Time period of winter
Astronomically, it starts with the winter solstice (around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere), and ends with the spring equinox (around March 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and September 21 in the Southern Hemisphere). In meteorology, it is by convention counted instead as the whole months of June, July and August in the Southern Hemisphere and December, January and February in the Northern Hemisphere.

However, in the United Kingdom and Ireland the winter solstice is traditionally considered as midwinter, the winter season beginning November 1 on All Hallows or Samhain. Winter ends and spring begins on Imbolc or Candlemas, which is February 1 or 2. This system of seasons is based on the length of days exclusively. The three-month period of the shortest days and weakest solar radiation occurs during November, December and January in the Northern Hemisphere (May-July in the Southern).

In Chinese astronomy (and other East Asian calendars), winter is taken to commence on or around November 7, with the JiΓ©qΓ¬ known as (立冬 lΓ¬ dōng, literally "establishment of winter".)

In reality, the three-month period associated with the coldest average temperatures typically begins somewhere in late November or early December in the Northern Hemisphere. If "winter" is defined as the statistically coldest quarter of the year, then the astronomical definition is too late by almost all local climate standards, and the traditional English/Irish definition of November 1 (May 1 in the Southern Hemisphere) is almost always too early to fit this standard. No matter the recogning, winter is the only season that spans two calendar years in the northern hemisphere. (In other words, there are very few temperate climates in which the vernal equinox is on average colder than the winter solstice, and very few temperate climates in which Samhain is colder than Imbolc)"

So guess we're both right, I base my affirmation on the solstices and equinoxes and you base yours in temperatures/length of days (?).

the last paragraph suits me the most
the astronomical date is much too late

here we say that winter is when it's cold and it snows
first snow opens the winter, no snow means no winter
we base our understanding of seasons on the weather because that's what they are about mostly and that's wha affects the agriculture
who cares if it's astronomical spring if it's still snowing, you cannot prepare the fields yet
seasons are not something regular, they start when they start, not when the callendar tells you

here autumn begins with mushrooms and falling leaves, that is august/late august and also it's the time of the last food gathering- august/september
winter begins with the snow, if there is no snow then we say there is no winter, it's only winter time(from dec 1st till 28/29th feb) but no real winter
spring is when there are these white flowers that grow under the snow, if there is no snow or if the snow stays longer than the end of feb then march 21st is the begining of spring, that's the only case when we use the callendar time
summer is when the flowers are gone which is by the end of may
generally may is the best month here

see, different places- different seasons
some locations don't have seasons at all, so they don't care about the callendar
the fact that there is snow does mean it's winter
I don't know, maybe you guys just don't get it because you don't get snow
here the whole life and death depended on the proper seasons reckognizing, no one cared about the callendar as it has nothing to do with reality

rydi1689 In reply to calleena [2008-12-03 20:45:49 +0000 UTC]

our seasons depend on the sun position
It'd be "stupid" to consider your way of seeing seasons where I live because if we did we'd only have an eternal Autumn because it's always raining here.

It may not snow but it's very cold in our winter, January and February are the coldest months.

Again, it's not because the callendar tells you when the seasons start it marks the position of the sun in the sky! Seasons change with the solstices and equinoxes
Vernal equinox and Autumnal equinox = day and night last the same
Winter solstice = night lasts more than day => less sun time- less warmth -more cold - snow
Summer Solstice = day lasts more than night => more sun time - more warmth - less cold - good wheather

Β·_____Β· those places that don't have seasons like the poles or the Ecuador don't have them because sun rays "hit" them almost the same everytime, it's not like our countries where sun rays get to us almost vertically in summer and pretty horizontal in winter.

But then again, you do it as you please .

calleena In reply to rydi1689 [2008-12-03 21:41:02 +0000 UTC]

It wouldn't be stupid, if you don't have snow you don't have winter. Winter is equal with snow and negative temperatures.

You forgot the air drifts, winter comes when wintery air comes, not because of the sun. Sun has nothing to do with the seasons where I live, they totally depend on the air. Air doesn't go with the callendar/solstices/equinoxes.
If the air comes from the west we have no winter and no summer, if it comes from Russia then we have a winter and a summer. Sun doens't matter much, the sky is covered with a thick layer of clouds 3/4 of the year anyway.

Look Rydi, this is riddiculous to think of the seasons because of the sun position, callendar and such. Astronomy doesn't work here. Like it or not, December 21st is the middle of winter, not the beginning. Same as 21sr March is not the beginning of spring since it begins in April, summer lasts only one month and it's July. What's the point when on November 20th you have -10 and on Dec 21st you have -5, winter is winter, who cares about the sun position when you do have winter already.

What you're talking about is synthetic, made up by humans. Nature is more important, humans knew seasons before they learned astronomy and invented the callendars.
