Please help what is the trick to high lights on charcoal?? is it the paper you get or eraser..s the eraser doesn't life the charcoal for me....im seriously frustrated have been for last few months and cant find no help. Dwain

it depends on both, the paper and what shades of charcoal. The more white you use then of course the more the highlights would stand out. You could use white (in pencil or in stick form like chalk) charcoal on gray/toned paper which is my preferred method of making drawings rather than on black or white with chalk.... its alot easier. if you dont have any toned paper i highly recommend getting either gray or like a brown/tan color cuz it serves for a good midtone especially when you are shading faces and other stuff with large smooth areas(like skin, for example). Dont use an eraser, ever, EVER! Cuz charcoal will not erase it will just smudge and leave you with a mess behind.. its not like graphite. You just have to be careful where you apply your shadowing and highlighting before its too late haha. Hope that was helpful!

Thank you!! Lol, I used an eraser and I scratched in some other hairs with a mechanical pencil and then went over the lines... It was a real pain.
