My Spirited Away tribute for Gallery 1988's Crazy 4 Cult 10th Anniversary show in L.A. This is my favorite Miyazaki film and one of my all-time favorite films ever so I was thrilled it was on the list as an option for this show. Prints will be available at Gallery1988.com in November after the gallery showing.Watercolor + watered down ink

this is absolutely gorgeous with an eye catching composition but the perspective of Haku's head really bugs me.
Β I think it isΒ the horns that ruin the whole head.Β
The horns are drawn to imply that his head is tilted because they do not break the water's surfaceΒ
But the foreground horn's length imply a greater head tilt than what is happening and the placement of the farther estΒ horn is still telling me I am supposed to be looking at the top of his head.Β
As it looks like if this haku was looking directly at me his one longest horn would wrap over his head and point to the right and his short horn horn would be U shaped with axis of the bow jutting far to the right.Β
Haku, as depicted in the movie, has horns that jut upwards at steep and slight angle.Β
It really is a shame because it's a glaringly distracting mistake that could have been fixed before coloring (or even after via digital manipulation)

Yeah, honestly there's a lot off about this painting- but I've grown to like it quirkiness. More so than Haku's head, the angle of the tracks on the train-tracks are off, so the whole perspective looks wrong. And his bottom foot angle makes so sense for real movement. And these issues could not have been fixed before coloring, because the lines were inked beforehand. It's mostly because I was working flat and never looked at it standing up. The original digital sketch was actually more accurate.
But, like I said, it's not really a concern of mine to fix at this point. I learned from it, and now actually sorta like it's awkward traits.
