Description I made this materials list as a commission for someone awhile ago and have been meaning to update it to post here on DA and I finally found the motivation. So here are my materials I use for painting with explanations and suggestions for everyone who has asked what I use to paint and ink with. These were collected over years- so you definitely wouldn't have to start with everything on the list, but hopefully it proves useful!

STRETCHING INFO

Stretching your paper for watercolor is extremely important, especially when you're planning to work on something for a long time. Proper stretching allows you to work on a flat surface for the entirety of your painting without the painting buckling, as wet paper does naturally. I laid out the materials you need above, but if you want to see my process, here is a video tutorial of the exact way I stretch my work.

Stretching Tutorial Video

I often see people use tape to stretch their paper, but I find this incredibly unreliable. Even professional grade tapes cannot accomplish what tacks or a staples can. Stretching is done to anchor the paper while it has expanded with water, so it can no longer shift or buckle when dry or re-wet. (Just like an oil/acrylic canvas is stapled around a frame)

You do not have to stretch every piece- if I'm doing a simple sketch or a painting that will not cover the entire canvas, I can deal with the slight warping. But 90% of my work is stretched and the benefits are wonderful while working. Also with this method, your finished watercolors will not warp once cut off the stretching board so they're easier to scan, ship, store, and frame.

Here is a tutorial on DA by the incredible blix-it . As she mentions, the staple holes won't matter if you give your painting enough room. Cut the painting off the board with a razor blade and trim the edges. Leave a white boarder like she shows and your work will be much easier to mat! www.deviantart.com/blix-it/art…

I finally got here after you so kindly pointed the way from Instagram. This is SO very helpful. I believe you've saved me a ton of money with this advice, and you'll laugh to know I was looking at some palette for sale that was three colours, black included, which I have since removed from sight, ha.Β

Thank you, thank you, thank you.Β

Oh I'm so glad to hear it was helpful! And money saving- that's always a plus

Haha, well don't let me stop you completely from painting with black. If you want to pain in grey-scale or more monotone palettes, then it's fun to try. But with color, I'd start with the primaries for sure. It's like a crash course in color theory and mixing.

Holy cow - I was looking into attempting water colour painting after being inspired by a few artists who do watercolour that I watch and this is so well thought out! I definitely feel more at ease knowing what I should or shouldn't purchase

That being said,Β I am creating an art resource group calledΒ the-artists-bible . I am wanting to fill it with high-quality tutorials and resources so it becomes a one-stop-shop for any artist wanting to improve or just needing a little help. I was hoping that you would allow me to add this tutorial to the group.Β

Aww, thank you so much for such great feedback! I love hearing that this has been even a tiny bit useful- I wasn't sure if my ramblings were actually going to accomplish anything
I'm so glad you're a little more at ease with watercolor supplies!

Absolutely- feel free to send a permission request to put this in your group.

Nice article, great info,
I started using syringes for water and mixing way back in the 90's
your the first I've seen that does the same.

Thank you so much!
That's so cool! I've never seen anyone use them either, but I can't imagine not having one. Especially when you're mixing a lot of paint for large washes. I've started hoarding them from times we've been to the vet.

I got one from a person that had drops for a baby in it,Β  large gauge and works for measuring amounts
when you want to try and match the hue's and tones, it works good because of the scale.
Two cc of this color and 4 cc of this with 120 cc of water.. it's prefect. got bunch more from an
insulin diabetic, that had a permanent shunt put in and didn't these old style of needle any more,
down to my last one, and the rubber gasket wears out and they begin to leak and stick.
push a little to hard an splat! paint every where need to get some more. they are the perfect
tool for the job, and way better then those plastic pipettes you can get, don't like them at all. Β

Yes the pets. Cat paw prints and hair on the painting and all over the workspace are a nightmare

Calmality In reply to AlexandraSerres [2018-01-14 07:10:00 +0000 UTC]

YES. There is nothing worse than framing a piece and seeing hair stuck on your painting behind glass. It's always everywhere!
And my cats seems to step in my reds 98% of the time so my carpet looks like someone tried to clean up the scene of a horrible accident.
