I totally fell in love with Dr Stone <3!
I handmade this Yuzuriha cosplay from velour leather and linen. Headwear is made with foam and worbla.

actually, it has to. You cannot lift up at the waist, because the waist is squishy flesh and if he would have grabbed me there, it would have been so painful. Also to lift up a person, you need to grab something tightly. Therefor you need to grab around the rib cage not the waist.
The rib cage is hard and not squishy flesh, so you can grab firmly around it to lift a person up.
Meanwhile you grab, you will definitely slide a bit more up. You actually need the thumb in the front, to balance it out, or otherwise you cannot lift the person up completely.
As an adult, you can maybe lift up a child without that much pressure on the rib cage. Mostly you grab children under the arms. But with adult humans, you cannot lift them up under the arms very well, because they have a different weight balance as children.
We tried the lifting up pose many times with different grabbing methods. My fiancée (male cosplayer on the pic) is very strong and does body building. I weight around 53kg. To lift me up like that into the air and hold me for 20 seconds to actually get some decent shots (and smile while doing it), it was the only spot you can grab that way. My chest actually prevented from sliding up way more when he lifted me.
You can try on your girlfriend/boyfriend or other friend when you don't believe me. But be careful,because it actually hurts a lot for the person to be lifted up when they get grabbed so tightly on the rips. It can leave bruises, so be careful.
