Sweet! Gah, I've been looking at some of your other stuff - I'm jealous! For starters, I want this program!!!!!!!!

I'm actually a bit busy with another render series (still ass-kicking though) at the moment so the chess may have to wait.
Check out my "amigos" renders; they're small previews of the full-size ones coming. After this is done, I'll be moving back to chess and trying other board poses and materials. I'm trying to focus on HDRI, but just a hint of it since it would look pretty strange in this "matrix" environment.
As for 3dsm7, I don't really want to provide some piracy here on dev, but it's actually very easy to get it, even off of the Discreet website. Feel free to email me or throw me a message on AIM/MSN for the details.

Tja, I've been using various versions of Bryce for the past few years, and I mean.. it's great and all, but it's render quality for ME isn't exactly what I've been looking for since I'm going more for realism than abstractism.. Bah, frustrating! And I don't own Poser, so I can't even add human figures to the mix! >.<.. I've tried a few other programs, but the really GOOD ones are so flipping EXPENSIVE T_T.. but if I see ya online, I won't hesitate to ask about this program - it's render quality is amazing!

I must agree. I've noticed that 3d studio max brings the greatest photorealism renders to the table. You can also use different renderers, some optimized for speed and quality. I happen to use Vray renderer instead of 3dsm's default scanline renderer. I used to use Mental Ray, which was a pretty popular one but when I found Vray and discovered some awesome reflect techniques, I stuck with it.
Believe it or not, these insanely realistic renders hardly take any work to make since they're all basic geometry, no complex shapes or anything. The realism comes in with the materials, and the renderer takes care of the realism. It's just a matter of putting in the proper settings. I was able to do this chess render in about two hours. The two hours were spent modeling the things (which was easy as cake, just drew half of it spline and lathe it) and three minutes making it look as real as it is.
As you said, these programs are indeed damn well expensive. Even Vray costs $800 USD, and that's just a renderer! But of course we browse the lovely internet where everything is virtually free.
Again, if you want 3d studio max 7 for free, throw me a message and I'll show ya.

The rooks are fine in my opinion. But the knights are completely flat. I plan to pull out a bit so it wasn't just cookie-cut.
We have to keep the environment in mind. It's essentially a floating chessboard in the middle of "the matrix". So there really is no defined lighting which would make caustics and shadows seem really out of place. HDRI would flow given the previous.

Yeh i suppose, but even in "the matrix" thing there is a light source... but it comes from ever direction, so yeh... i guess ur right it would look out of place.

I love this... but i think you need to put floor in and use a bit of HDRI to make em look super realistic... but GR8 models and great textures..... *Favourate*

I was actually thinking about adding HDRI, but I was looking for a very clean and polished look. HDRI would add some photo-realism to it, but it wouldn't make much sense if it was a "floating chess board" which was the effect I was going for.
I will definitely be taking your suggestion into account in future board renders as HDRI is really the next level of realism.

Yeah, I thought it matched the theme of all of the other pieces. And the "broken lines" running through it makes the refraction more intense. Otherwise, it would just be a virtually square piece. I think it could be a bit wider and perhaps more defined (looks like the edges of the shape push together too much, like at the mouth).

Fix the knight and you have a winning play set. This is really lovly on the eye and it is clear that you opted for the more futuristice clean feel, rather than making it like a real downbeat chess set like anyone who owns one is. Nice work

How do you suggest I fix the knight? I think the glass somewhat reduces its obnoxiousness.

i reckon make it fuller in all dimerions rather than having the head somewhat flat

It is a pretty thin, but when I went thicker, it would then go through the base. I think I'll be tweaking it some more in future renders. Thanks for the suggestion.
