Oh my gosh. This is so cute!
I love all the little touches you've added to this -- the texture of the sea stars, the little crab sitting on the rock, the little whiskers and tiny paws! There's so much to see in this little painting. The way you portrayed the refraction of light through the water gives it a palpable depth. I find it tough to draw underwater effects, but you make it look so easy!
The otter itself is absolutely adorable. I love the smooth texture of the wet fur, especially where the belly rises out of the water. I like how you used reflected color to show form -- such as the blue highlighting on the otter's face. The contrast of warm and cool hues is really visually interesting, and really grabbed my attention.
The only critique I might give, is that the eye could probably stand to be a angled slightly more toward the otter's nose. As it is now, it looks just a tad bit off kilter.
Overall though, this painting is just gorgeous. Congratulations on your Daily Deviation! I can't believe I hadn't seen your art before! I will definitely be watching your art in the future -- keep up the good work! You're really an inspiration. c:

I really appreciate the feedback :3 The water effects where even a bit beyond me, to be honest - it was just one of those magical moments where I was laying down paint in a certain way and realized with a few touches it would have a really lovely transparent effect. If I were trying to do it again on purpose, I'm not sure it would look as good!
And I did have a really hard time getting that eye to look right - trying to balance the exaggerated happy look with what looks physiologically right - I never quite was satisfied with it

Haha, aren't happy accidents awesome? I've had that happen to me a few times, and trying to replicate what I did is always so maddening.

This reminds me of the river otters I used to watch as a youngster. The bliss and humor in this are wonderful.

I live in Vancouver, and our Vancouver Aquarium has saved two very badly injured sea otters this past year. One was shot and left for dead.
This picture just brought me smiles, because I think of how happy these guys are now, safe and happy. This could easily be one of them with that lovely expression of bliss. And who knows? They might horde shells too!
He looks so satisfied, and content. And I love the way he's hugging his collection to his chest, like it's so dear t him.
The colours are so beautiful and so true to the sea. A very beautiful work.
