Description Eos and his friend Mateo, enjoying some male flirting time.

Mateo is my new character, he is a light gold coloured lion.

this picture was done as a grass drawing practice, and the effect worked so well.
the cloudy sky is from my photo stock.

Hi there

A nice piece you have painted here and thank you for sharing it with the group.  The first thing I noticed is that the characters are flat alongside the frame, which tends to make for a slightly tedious composition, as well as this their heads are not quite on a third, which tends to draw attention away from them.  The use of the grass brush in photoshop can be used well but overdone does not do the artist any favours.  The characters are well drawn and you obviously have studied cats a lot before to draw them this well so big ups on that.  If you slap a photo of some clouds in the background that have an obvious light source acting upon them then you really near adhere to this light source for the rest of the illustration.  Bearing this in mind you should revise the shadows on the characters and the rocks as well as the grass, speaking of which there are shadows on the rocks and the characters but no shadow is being cast on the grass from the cat's tails so they look slightly odd because of this.

Please don't take my critique as me trying to be mean or somehow offensive as this is in no way my intention.  You seem to have a lot better knack for drawing characters than environments so perhaps going down that route would work in your favour, perhaps making some pose and/or expression sheets of one of your characters would be good for your portfolio.

Keep up the good work and have a great christmas.

you don't have to worry, i like getting critiqued. it is how i learn. you definitely raised some good points for me to learn from.
you point about light sources is something i will be trying to put right next time. and i love the idea of doing some expression and pose sheets of my character.

thank you for the critique, they are always very helpful for me.

Ok thanks for letting me know, I sometimes worry that when I crit people's work it sounds mean to some degree.

Your quadruped drawings are really good, I suck at drawing four legged characters so anyone who can do them well is awesome in my book .

Hello Eos.  'm commenting as part of .

I must say at initial glance that I am impressed with your ability to mix the media and have it look so terrific.  Thumbnail size you can't really appreciate the effect but when the photo is enlarged that photo of the sky really looks terrific against the painted grass.  Speaking of the grass I think you did a terrific job of illustrating it. A lot of variation in size, shape, and color.  It really adds depth to the piece.  The lions are drawn very well, and you did a great job showing them on their backs, which could be challenging I'm guessing since I've never done it myself.  The only thing that I feel distracts slightly from the drawing is the black line around the rocks.  It gives the rock a false impression .  It makes it appear flat.  More shading, with contrasting lights and dark's, and eliminate the line and you have a perfect drawing.
Overall a wonderful job.

hello professorwagstaff
thank you, i am very pleased at how the photograph and tall grass blended so well.
the characters wen't too hard to draw lying down, but it was the entwined tails i found heard to get right.
the rock was the biggest problem for me to. i find rock shading very difficult. i might try experimenting with making the lines less dark.

thank you for your comments.

My pleasure.  Keep working at it and you will get it.  You obviously have the skills you just need more practice.

I love the mixed media aspect of this with the cloud background! It looks really nice! Your use of the grass brush is good too! The scene you're portraying here between the two characters is really sweet! The entwined tails are adorable! I see this piece was mostly for practicing grass. I don't many artists use the default PS brushes well do good job on that! It's good to mix brushes with hand-drawn work though. PS brushes, especially default ones, are very recognizable and can detract from the overall quality of a painting if used improperly. Specific brushes like ones for grass make a great base to start with, but finishing touches should always be hand-drawn! There are tons of great grass tutorials on DA for this!->www.deviantart.com/browse/all/… I'm still learning how to do grass myself so I understand how tricky it can be!
Great job!

thank you for the comment. the Entwined tails is probably my favourite part, because of it's adorableness.
very good point about the PS grass brushes. the tall Grass behind the characters looks good to me, but i could have done better with the grass in front.
thank you for the tutorial tips to.
