I thought that was a shadow at first, on the wall (garage door?) behind the subjects, but no it's paint. The diagonal line ties the photo together. Very nice photo, not to mention how could the subject be anything but a sentimental favorite?
Congrats to your wife. I think the affection of the photographer shows through in the photograph.

We are sitting with our backs to a red/yellow lifeguards hut at the seaside....keeping out of the wind to eat our ice creams. I'll pass on your praise to my wife
