Chesseurs

This is a variation on Chessers , from a different angle, etc.

I used to say in Chess Club that “Chesseurs” is Chess’s little Francophone sister.

Well, I thought it was funny.

Guidelines: Something to do with chess.

Chess is one of the most popular strategy games, dating back;

But, it is hardly the only one, from around the world;

And, it has many variants, itself, which continue to develop.

One thing I could never figure out in history class was why people would fight for thousands of years over the same few meters. Why not go around, or make a deal? Surely that would be cheaper?

And, the teacher would say, "Don't call me 'Shirley'."
And, "Maybe, you should consider going into the diplomatic service."
[We do have some nice embassies and consulates.]

Memo:

I had a couple of friends who were always looking for variants on chess, adding dice; so, pieces could defend and attack;

And, multiple levels, like Three-Dimensional Chess; and, boards.

They especially like playing multiple games at once, even in our hands;

Which was kind of funny, on the subway: I had a hard enough time remembering where all my pieces were, when the board was in front of me;

Let alone when we were playing on multiple boards; or, without a board entirely.

It reminded me of playing tennis with them: it always seemed like I was playing on all the courts, they way they had me running back and forth, and up and down;

I guess it was good exercise; until, I had to stop, literally, for a “breather”.

It was Memorial Day , when this was first finished.

Even in history class, I could never get over how people have been fighting, and dying, for the same meter or two of ground, for sometimes thousands of years.

It’s discombobulating, to think that humanity is supposed to be the apogee of Creation, or Evolution, as “Homo Sapiens”: the thinking ape.

One would think most people just want to live a quiet life, with their family and friends;

While politicians and dukes, in safety, throw away their lives, for their personal profit;

I’ve seen wildlife, in the forest, with more concern for the others they share their habit with; and, co-operation.

The final fight takes place on a giant computer controlled chess board- very 60’s.

Memo:

In Grade School, I was part of the Chess/ Checkers/ Board Games Club and Team.

We inherited a few boards and pieces; but, no complete sets.

So, we made up a couple of new games.

Chesseurs:

In Chesseurs [or, Chessers] pieces battle over a square, by rolling dice: 2 for main pieces; and, 1 for pawns.

Otherwise, the normal rules and values apply.

Royal Chesseurs:

Multiple chess boards and their pieces are combined, usually 6.

This creates an Emperor/ Empress, [Empress’s side] Duke/ Duchess, and [Emperor’s side] Prince/ Princess; instead, of the usual King and Queen, on either side.

The additional courts are denoted by coloured elastic bands, or coloured tape.

The Duke/ Duchess and Prince/ Princess have the same moves as a traditional Queen.

If the Emperor is taken, the Empress, and Prince/ Princess, Duke/ Duchess can take the Emperor’s place.

Memo:

A couple of players allowed pieces to switch loyalties, when captured, as in Shogi.

Some players added dice and spell books, from their Role Playing Games;

It’s incredible how many variants on Chess there are in the world;

And, continuing to be developed, like Quantum Chess.
