There have been so many teachers, coaches, mentors, and just nice people in my life who were members of the LGBTQ+I Community, for whom I have been so grateful.
It is a shame that so many of them felt that they had to hide, not just a part of their lives, which they wanted to keep private; but, a part of who they were, often because they were afraid; or, ashamed; even to themselves.
That’s just sad; and, a disgrace to our society, if we want to be a Free and Democratic, Civil Society.
By having the courage to keep this issue Out There, for so long, it makes us all more free.

[1a] Have you observed LGBTQ+ Pride Month?
My whole life people have called me “Queer”, like my Mum who was called a “Witch” her whole life; it finally seemed better to own it than fight it.

[1b] What is most meaningful about it to you?
It is both wonderful and awful that people have had the courage, often at great personal risk to themselves and their loved ones, to stand up for personal Human Rights and Freedoms;
And, a shame that they have had to do so, at such risk for so long, especially in countries which claim to be free and democratic, civil societies.

[2] Have you shared your identity or allyship through your art?
It doesn’t seem possible, at least for me and possibly for anyone, to hide themselves behind any sort of a mask, even a pseudonym;
And, when I’ve tried, people have instantly known it was me anyway.
So, maybe we shouldn’t try to hide who and what we are; and, hopefully won’t feel the need to.
There have so often been times, even now, when neighbours have made me feel afraid for existing and being who and what I am; which is just awful;
And, hypocritical when they regularly attend services celebrating their rights and freedoms and religious faith.
[3] Who are some of your favorite LGBTQ+ artists, past and present?
Everyone who celebrates and promotes the rights of the individual and their freedom to express themselves.
Frankly, and this may be controversial to say; but, I think EVERYONE is on the spectrum of being human; whatever their preferences or predilections;
And, as my Mum said even when I was a kid, it’s okay if those change over time; or, in even in the moment:
Love is Love. (And, it’s okay sometimes, just to have fun.)
Yup. That’s what she said.

Full Disclosure: I’ve been on dates with people from all sorts of genders, when my health permitted: and, survey says, I’m rubbish at all of them.
But, it’s something worth working on. As my last girlfriend said, “You just need more practice.”
