One of the best viewpoints in the Old City is Dufferin Terrace, next to the Chateau Frontenac. This is a night view across the river and to Levis, the town right across. Given that the St. Lawrence River is also a trade route for ships going to the Atlantic, it will not be surprising to see cargo ships sailing past this area.
