Candy wrapped her arms around him and squeezed. Part of her wanted to laugh at how sensitive he was being to a very basic temptation she felt everyone would have. But she sensed what he needed right now was just someone to understand what he was going through.

He sighed: "It sounds silly now. It was just hours of relentless guilt."

Clearly the subjective perception of time could vary more here than in the waking world, as from her perspective she and Drew had only been apart for a dozen minutes or so.

She felt his tension ease somewhat. "We’re together again. It’s OK. We’re OK," she said, rubbing his back as they embraced.

He smiled. "Thanks."

The warm light grew to their left again.

Candy: "And just when I thought it was going to calm down..."

Drew: "Looks like another memory."

It was the main lobby at the Newton Home. Candy's early abode; a place for - as the authority figures there had put it - "gifted or unusual children without guardians."
And it had been a magnet for a bully like Billy Phillips, today accompanied by one of his sycophantic proteges: blonde and slightly portly Steve.

He didn't live there but he went to the same public school with young Drew and Candy; no he had a regular somewhat wealthy family who lived in the area - but from time to time his apparently insatiable lust for a target led him to the easily abusable children there.

6-year old Candy found herself always trying to understand him. She felt an urge to help him see the error of his ways - one she would later regard as naive, but at the time was devoid of any ill will toward him.

"Nobody will be your Mom," Billy thundered. "You’re trash! Like most of the mongroids in this reject home for l o s e r s! Ha ha ha!"

Young Candy met his gaze: "But she’s right there! Look!" she pointed.

In the shared dream, Drew felt young Candy's frustration. He was surprised by it - there was an empathetic sensation, but it was stronger. He felt like he was seeing things quite literally from young Candy's point of view.
Drew could see a stunningly attractive woman, maybe 25; sandy dark brown hair worn in a smart pony tail with bangs that framed her features perfectly. Slick business pantsuit - all the rage at the time probably - but more than that it was her demeanor. Her immediate appearance may have been young but her eyes told a far different story. As Drew saw the memory he felt young Candy's love for and trust of her too. He was shocked by the power of it. It was both alien and invigorating to him.

Billy shoved little Candy to the floor. "Shut up, you’re so sad you have to imagine a mom! Nobody wants you!"

Candy whimpered as she fell on her butt. She rolled to her feet adroitly but massaged her wounded dignity.

"Hey! That's not nice!" Impotent retort, but relieving in its own way.

Billy heard the approach of an adult from one of the adjoining offices. He turned toward the main door and Steve followed suit.

"Yeah you better stay down," he smirked. "Come on Steve, let's get outta here."
"Ha," Steve chuckled. "Yeah."

After they had gone, Candy turned to Tia, who crouched beside her on the polished wood floor.

Candy: "Why are they so mean, Tia?"

Tia rested her forearms on her knees and seemed to regard Candy for a moment before speaking. When she finally did, it felt as if her voice were more than a disturbance in the air. It felt like it was inside Candy's own thoughts as well.

Tia said: "Why does a lion sink its teeth into the neck of a struggling gazelle?"
