I've been rewatching Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal and I've been meaning to defend him.

Calling him a bad protagonist because he loses battles easily is where I looked more. The reason why he kept losing duels because he was new to the game and didn't understand how it worked and later episodes and seasons, he got better.

"He always needs Astral to help him win battles". And? Yugi always had Pharaoh help him in his battles and this is coming from someone who likes Yugi as a character. Yuma is no different. There was an episode where he was battling a gang member who was being controlled by a Barian card and he risked himself to keep Astral safe. Sure he gets him back in the end but this proves he was able to battle without needing Astral.

"Loud and Obnoxious". My brother in spirit, he's 13 years old. Of course he's gonna be obnoxious. Isn't that what some teens are?

"He's not even good at dueling". Once again, he didn't know how to duel when he was a kid. Yuma is a fresh take on a new protagonist and that shows that he doesn't need to be good at dueling already to be a good protagonist. Hell it's ok to lose sometimes and have fun. That's my honest defense on Yuma from Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal.
