Description 12 hours, this is me trying hard to create something for my portfolio.
inspired by the recently released dark souls II's 12 mins gameplay and despair trailer, so I figure I want to create that dark souls brutal and epic feel

Great job! I created my own quick paint-over of this (for some reason). Mine is quite different though, but I decided to show it to you. And since it's a paint-over I'm not going to upload it anywhere "as mine". I left out the dragons/demons too. 0:

it's okay, feel free to post it on your dA, it's your hard work after all, just credit me :Β). if you are using photoshop, here's some tips and tricks to help you improve your painting:
Put a black and white adjustment layer on top, toggle its visibility to check your value, as you'v already known, things get lighter as they get further.
The sky should be lighter than your foreground, there should be a light source indication too, unless you want to go for an overcast day.
The fire or secondary light source is too bright! pure white and black are rarely seen in real life, plus it's a fire, as orange and red light can travel just a short distance, you should reduce the intensity as well as the saturation to make that light look believable. It should just be enough to draw the eyes to the statue.

It was just a quick (15-20 min) paint-over made directly on top of yours though so I didn't use so much time on it. I only made it to correct some of your mistakes that I saw, and in my rush apparently made a few of my own. As for you, remember this; light against dark and dark against light. I'm indicating towards things such as the top of the hooded figure's head. It should be dark since it's directly against the sky. And so should the [nearest] dragon as well.

The center of the fire should perhaps be a little bit more brighter in value, and it should reflect a little bit more on the statue as well. It also looks like the character is missing his shadow. Well, there are a few mistakes here and there-- with both perspective and composition, but we all make mistakes and it's good that we correct each other and learn from those.

also, I enjoyed your gallery a lot, I always love speed painting, I should do one some day. I have this tendency to add lots of details when doing speed paint, that I literally ruin everything, i'ts a bad habit that I should fix. anyway, great works my friend.

Thanks. I like your works too. :] I would type something more intellectual here as a response but I'm kind of busy at the moment. 0:

yes, I noticed lots of flaws in my painting, I can't fix it now since my tablet is broken though. I always concentrate on the more overall lighting mood first, the little details can be ignore, because my OCD can get very bad sometimes if I'm to keep doing it. but it's always so fun to learn more, discovering possibilities and flaws, right ? i hope you had a good time :ΒD
