Description Animated canine running cycle, starring my albino sighthound character Machete.
Total 6 frames.
Drawn traditionally with a pencil + colors and background texture added with Gimp.

~And now please excuse me as I ramble something completely incoherent here~
There has been quite a lot of great animations in here lately, and for years I've been itching to create one of my own. Few days back the fantastic Hound run cycle was submitted by *The-Vol , and at that moment the urge to make moving pictures grew unbearable. Vol really did miracles using only 6 frames, and that gave me some much needed encouragement to try something similar. At that far animating had been something unreachable. Artform that only professionals can master. So I sketched some running hounds, colored and pieced them together in Gimp.
And found out that animating ain't that hard after all.
Surely this one is terribly sketchy and wobbly and ridiculously inconsistent. It's missing a couple of frames here and there, and to be honest, there's little originality, considering how common canine run cycles are in dA. There's probably hundreds of them. So it's nothing really really special.

But darn, I'm still kind of proud. It's my very first attempt on a bit more serious animating after all.

Character, artwork ©GhoulShoe

And that head, oh Mache, what is your head even doing? It looks like he's barking or something, but I'd say it's just breathing. I mean, have you ever tried to run at full speed with your mouth closed? It sure looks more aesthetic than having half of your dental arsenal showing and tongue lolling out, but you're certainly not going very far or fast like that. From what I've learned from the dozens (hundreds?) of sighthound photos posted on tumblr is that the hounds almost always have their mouths open when sprinting. For oxygen. And for ventilation too, perhaps. But yeah, no barking here, just wanted to point that out.

And it's sort of funny how much more sighthound-like Machete looks when he's running. He may not beat a Greyhound or a Whippet in a race, and I doubt if he even likes to waste his energy for such physical activities, but I's say he's still able to build up quite impressive speed.

Hey CanisAlbus, I was wondering how you added the background texture with GIMP. It looks like Machete is super-imposed on the GIMP background, but whenever I try to do that the white background of my animation gets in the way of the GIMP background I'm trying to add. Is there some way to make the background transparent? thnx

I've always understood how you do the frames, but how do you piece them together and get them to actually move?

to animate with GIMP just click "new layer" and draw or copy/paste your new frame there. then you just go to "filters" at the menu bar on top, find and hover your mouse over "animation", and then hit "playback". You can further toggle your animation from there

Whoa I really like how you've done this, and I don't think he looks like he's barking, just looks like he's doing the typical crazy sighthound running face ;'D and I also can't believe it's only 6 frames! You've done a really good job :3

How did you put the frames together in gimp, did you do it with layers?

Wonderful little animation

Although drawn traditionally... this actually belongs in the animation section of #Sightly-SightHounds Ive moved it myself, I can see it was an innocent mistake

Jes, teit animaation!
Haha, muistan oman syklini jonka tein Baltoa reffaten VHS:stä joskus 2006. x'D

I like the style a lot! And the movement really looks energetic, lol
Yeah, as people said, the head might be moving a bit much- dogs have their mouths open, but they have it about as much open all the time, and the head moves forward and backward more than up and down- ehh, it's hard to explain, here's a really good reference video of a dog in slow-mo:
[link]
It's a heavier dog, but still.
Anyways, I think it's really good overall!

this is great, good work

I think a more up and down on the chest is missing though, it look a bit stuck in comparison to the rumps up and down.

And a note to the thought of it being an "artform only proffesionals can master", you have to start somewhere right. Nobody is born with it, it's all practice, how far you take it is up to you. Just get cracking, because this is great

I'm sorry, but as an animation nerd, I can say this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. ^^ Actual hard angles that add up to the character, instead of wonking out all over the place. A powerful high jump that the character uses to gain energy. The contacts and breakdowns could use work, but that's academic, it doesn't detract at all from the character.

There's a saying that animation is slower to repay you the longer you work on it... by extension, it rewards a first timer very well. It's magical, seeing your characters move. If you do more, please grow from here, for your own sake as an artist. 0u0
and when I say I'm an animation nerd, I mean that for a small sum, I can teach you to recognize the different animators in Looney Tunes shorts on sight. If you ever feel like learning new things...

Not bad! Especially for a first try at a canine running cycle! Color me impressed!

If you're open to a bit of criticism, I do have a bit of advice as to the movement for your next shot (:
1) It's a bit jerky. There's not much ease in the movement. I'd suggest you slow down the movements a bit (with more frames, whether doubles or extra drawn frames), when the back legs are on the ground. That's when the canine would have most resistance of weight, as that's where the power comes from.
2) I think the slope of the back could use a bit more ease in the movement of it's flexing. The problem might actually be with the movement of the head. Something there seems a bit jumpy.
3) One more note: I notice that at two points in this run cycle, all four feet are off the ground. Salukis are the breed of dog that do that! Just an interesting note (: It's not technically wrong in a canine run cycle, especially with this kind of build (it looks right to me here), but it's something to consider between different run cycles (:

Again, I'm incredibly impressed and I'd love to see another attempt! I especially love the movement of the til!
