I really like how you were able to capture the motion of the water. I still havn't been able to do that lol

canuckgurl22 In reply to ScottishRose [2007-02-09 05:00:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yeah, this was my first time 'cause I thought I needed a camera with the abilitiy to choose shutter speeds and such. Although I think now it would be possible to get some motion water shots by shooting on an overcast day with a tripod and a basic point and shoot camera. So you should try it sometime.

ScottishRose In reply to canuckgurl22 [2007-02-09 05:03:57 +0000 UTC]

maybe I will. I've tried water shots before, but to me I don't get the movement. any hints?

canuckgurl22 In reply to ScottishRose [2007-02-09 05:17:12 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... well a tripod and overcast day are vital. On a sunny day the water will have overexposed spots and it will be hard to get it to blur if your camera only has auto modes because the more light there is the faster the shutter speed will be on the water. You need a real slow one to get the water looking like it is in this photo. What type of camera and settings do you have?

Depends on who's with me, or who's camera I have. My own is a little point and click film (which I rarely use) My dad's is a Cannon 10D, and the friend's I use most is Kodak easyshare CX7220 zoom. I usually alternate between those two.

canuckgurl22 In reply to ScottishRose [2007-02-09 06:06:11 +0000 UTC]

Well I don't own an SLR, but I have a fair knowledge of them and I basically have no experience with film. lol. So Kodak easyshare CX7220 zoom has 2X, 2MP? That's what I read. I'd really stick to the 10D for a water shot like this. That's a much better camera than even what I used to make this shot. I would put the camera in AutoFocus, unless you like Manual. But SLR's have real good AF. Then I'd suggest using either the AV mode and using an the largest f. stop number (for maximum sharpness of non-water things) or you can use the "TV" mode to control just the shutter speed. I hope that kinda made sense, I don't know exactly what your knowledge is on camera functions and such.

LoL not much really, well, I understand but not how on the camera... Still experimenting and learning what all the buttons and doohickys do lol. My dad would teach me if he had time, but it's basicly all up to me.

I'd really suggest reading some books from your local library. I have read probably well over 30 by now and that's how I learned to use shutter speeds and aperture choices.

use a two second delay before the capture. That is if you are using a 1-15-30sec exposure. That way there is no vibration of your hand leaving the camera... it helps some.

very nicely captured!!! LOVE the leaves and the water looks great as well. But did you try for longer exposures? Like 1 sec - 5 secs?

BEAUTIFUL shot! The composition is just awesome.
Keep up the great work!

canuckgurl22 In reply to FAceleSS-21 [2006-10-13 05:59:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. I did try some longer exposures, I don't remember if I did for this one... I don't think so though. It was really windy and my tripod isn't exactly the greatest thing. Camera doesn't screw on so great to it.... like I have to hold the camera sturdy on the tripod while pushing the shutter because it moves. So yeah, when I was looking at some of my even longer exposures, many were blurry.
