Description
“How could you, Fiona?”

Tails’ question was punctuated by the far less verbal back and forth going on around them, as Sonic and Scourge rolled along the ground, trading blows. Their fight, like all those going on at the moment, was a personal matter. The former Anti-Sonic and Mobius’ native son had never been on cordial terms, and things between them were finally coming to a head. Elsewhere, Knuckles battled the mad Doctor Finitavius.

“How could you betray us?”

Fiona’s eyes moved back and forth, searching through shaded corners and piles of machinery and broken robots. Finitavius’ lab was a junkyard from another time, strewn with the industrial relics of some too-human era. Everything was too large in scale for her liking, and it reminded her of when she had been captured, all those years ago. He was hiding somewhere nearby; her ears moved, trying to pinpoint his location.

“Easily,” she purred, making her way past the silent frame of a lathing machine. “Working with you boys had seemed like a fun way to spend my time at first, but each of you became more unbearable by the day.”

“How can you say that? We helped you, housed you, we...” his voice trailed off, but that was alright. She had a good idea of where he was.

With grin, she jumped, bouncing off an old robotic arm, and landing a flying kick on a body hiding in the shadows. She felt her foot connect with something solid, but it didn’t feel quite like flesh and bone. Alighting back on the old arm, she saw Tails fall back and land, feet first, on the ground, unhurt.

“Fiona, please…!” he pleaded. “Whatever Scourge has on you, we can help!”

“You don’t get it do you?” she jumped down, watching him for any sudden movement. “I don’t want to go back to your little Freedom House get together. And I’m tired of hearing how you just want to help me. That’s your problem! You and Sonic and the rest - always helping others and never yourselves. I don’t know how anyone can stand your sanctimonious bullshit.”

Tails’ ears drooped, a distraught expression on his face.

Fiona chose that moment to attack. She’d knocked him out before with a sucker punch, and while she had no expectation that it would be so easy a second time, she was sure she’d be able to handle him. Her kick snapped out to take his jaw off, but before it could connect it met a wall of light orange – one of his tails – and bounced right off. She tried again as her feet touched the ground, aiming a punch around the tail to hit him in the face. But, too fast, the tail moved, knocking her blow aside.

Gritting her teeth in frustration, she tried to sweep one of her legs and thus knock him off his feet. But again one of his tails swept out and deflected her attack. Gracefully she jumped up, high, and tried to bring both feet down on the top of his head. Her descent stopped, instantly, as her boots instead hit the white tip of one of his tails. She stood there for a few shocked seconds, held in the air over him.

With a growl of frustration, she jumped off and landed nearby.

“What do you think you’re you doing, just standing there?” she asked, and reached behind her. The Freedom Fighters seemed to disdain guns (at least now-a-days) much to her annoyance and disgust, but Dr. Finitavius had been kind enough to indulge her. Feeling her hand wrap around the grip of the handgun, she smiled.

Her draw was fast.

Not as fast as Nack’s, but still pretty good. Better still, she had surprise and shock in her favor. Tails’ eyes widened in dismay and disbelief even as his tails themselves tried to move and shield his body. Fiona didn’t hesitate. Three shots rang out, and her opponent fell back with a yelp.

“That takes care of that. Stupid kid…” She mused, and turned around to where Scourge and Sonic were still fighting. It seemed that her new paramour wasn’t quite living up to his boasts, as the original Sonic now had him in an arm lock on the floor. Scourge was kicking, desperate to get free and cursing in anger and humiliation. Both he and Sonic were distracted, the latter with his back to her.

Fiona sighed; she would just have to help Scourge out, as much as it galled her.

“So long, lover boy,” she whispered, and took aim as Sonic’s back. At this range, there was no way she’d miss. It’d finally be Game Over for the ‘Mobius’ greatest hero.’

“Stop!”

“What the…?!”

She whirled, but not quickly enough. A hand reached out and grabbed her by the front of her jumpsuit, while another slapped aside her gun. Her finger tightened around the trigger, firing off a shot that went wide, missing her assailant entirely. Fiona felt her footing slip as she was pushed backwards, and a second later the gun was wrenched from her fingers by a hard twist. Her attacker pulled her through the air, and then her back hit a wall with a painful thud.

“You’ve gone too far!” Tails snarled, throwing away the gun and cocking back his right hand. “It’s over, Fiona!”

She winced, keeping her eyes shut, but nothing happened.

Slowly opening her eyes, she saw Tails’ face, and smirked.

“Is it?” she asked, still pinned against the wall. “Then go on! Do it! What are you waiting for? Hit me!!”

The muscles in his arm tensed, but he didn’t move. There were tears in his eyes as he stared at her, a mixture of grief and disbelief and rage playing across his features. He was all but paralyzed by what she had almost done to his friend, to his mentor, and it seemed as if all the emotions of the last few months – since she had first started dating Sonic – were replaying through his mind all at once. Her grin became crueler.

“Look at you!” she taunted, not even bothering to try and protect herself. “How could you imagine that I would ever love such a spineless man? You’re a joke.”

As to what happens after that, I leave open to speculation.

This little one page comic thing was inspired, of course, by some of the newer Archie Sonic comic stuff. Particularly Fiona's betrayal of Sonic and Tails and the rest, joining up with Scourge/Anti-Sonic (I suspected it was a ploy). Archie-type Tails is still mostly operating under the paradigm of "immature little kid character" but we can always imagine that he kicks ass like he does in the games.

8/19/08 - additional note
After thinking it over, I believe I'm going to leave this with the open ended ending it has here, so people can continue to freely imagine what happens next, without spoiling it by adding another page.

However, the popularity of this piece and the fun I had making it inspired me to integrate a similar Tails/Fiona scene into my "Cycle of Ages: A Chosen One" rewrite. Chapter 3, scene 13 to be specific. [link]
