Claystar is the old Shadowclan leader, tired and worn out from watching his friends die and facing battle and begging to leave his place, but he stays, because he is loyal to his clan. His lieutenant, and best friend, died of old age and it was Reedheart who took his place, a very young warrior with no experience but promising.

Mist was a warrior from The Tribe of Rushing Water, dreaming of adventure and meeting. He hated to see always the same cats in his tribe, being content to hunt every day, as if life were a succession of identical days. He ended up going into the unknown before meeting Shadowclan and settling there temporarily. Eventually he learned to be a medicine cat and stayed behind, enjoying the clan feuds that spice up his life.

Sandfang is a Savannah cat (closer to the serval than to the cat, his grandfather was a serval), coming from a kennel from which he fled, frightened by two legs. Shadowclan discovered him as a kit and adopted him, intrigued by his appearance. He is rather cowardly and a great shy person, which earns him kind teasing from his clanmates. Growing up, he becomes a dreamy warrior, who prefers to avoid combat, but if the lives of his clanmates are on the line, he becomes redoubtable and his serval genes make him dangerous and invincible.

Sweetclaw was born clawless in Shadowclan, killing his mother in childbirth. While his brother, Reedheart, is beloved by their clanmates, sees him in his shadow, mocked and humiliated for the absence of his claws. His mentor is Stonefeather, a Shadowclan-Kittypet half-blood, who is looked down upon by his clanmates. He is abusive and mistreats Sweetclaw, to get revenge for the way his clanmates treat him. Sweetclaw quickly turned cold, sarcastic, and cynical to protect himself from being teased. However, he does not hate his brother, who loves him and helps him as best he can to overcome his trials. Their father, Squirreltail, raised them with love and is always present for his sons, especially Sweetclaw, from whom he learns to fight mainly with fangs to compensate for the softness of his paws. Apprentice, Sweet despises Sandfang, whom he describes as a coward because of his peaceful side. He is jealous that the savannah has all the assets to be able to fight and does not make use of them. But by becoming a warrior, he calms down and begins to forge a deep friendship with Sanfang, who will eventually become his mate.

Hawkkit(blaze) and Buzzardkit(feather) are Reedheart's son and daughter. Sweetclaw adores his nephew and niece and obtains Buzzardpaw as an apprentice, with whom he forms a solid relationship based on respect. He's proud to see her progress and makes sure to treat her as different as possible than the way Stonefeather treated him.
