Description In 2008 a friend of mine booked me a pleasure flight on this very DC3 as an early birthday present (The flight was April 26th 2008 and my birthday is June 12th)
He wouldnt tell me where we were going until we got right near to Coventry airport. Needless to say it was a huge surprise. The flight took us over Bruntingthorpe and back to Coventry. It was great to be on such an old aircraft. G-AMPY was built in 1943. I'll never forget this flight and I fell in love with the DC3 that day.

How come?

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2010-06-04 19:53:27 +0000 UTC]

OK,the original mould for the kit was a USAF KC-135,made in 1956....the industry has come a ways since then! it was actually 1/143 scale...close enough.

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2010-06-05 15:00:58 +0000 UTC]

i,m trying to think how many times Revell has issued that same basic moulding over the years....so many different boxings, both military and commercial! add an extra sprue with a saucer, and it,s an AWACS...

haha..

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2010-06-05 20:28:49 +0000 UTC]

they,ve certainly got a lot of mileage out of that 1956 mould.....

captainflynn In reply to TomCatDriver [2010-06-05 20:36:45 +0000 UTC]

haha. Its a nostalgic model now. Not as nostalgic as a DC3, but near enough haha

captainflynn In reply to TomCatDriver [2010-06-06 11:58:03 +0000 UTC]

Ahh that explains why I havent heard of them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2010-06-06 15:18:05 +0000 UTC]

i suppose they didn,t export that much. Revell has a larger international sales/distribution network.

captainflynn In reply to TomCatDriver [2010-06-06 18:31:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah! That explains it for certain then.

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2010-06-06 21:21:35 +0000 UTC]

also, most of Monogram,s aircraft subjects were 1/48,and British modellers usually preferred 1/72.

captainflynn In reply to TomCatDriver [2010-06-06 22:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Ahh I see! Why is that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2010-06-07 09:41:48 +0000 UTC]

that was the scale they were used to...it started with FROG Penguin kits back in 1939.{the world,s first plastic models!}

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

captainflynn In reply to TomCatDriver [2010-06-07 11:36:00 +0000 UTC]

I think I heard of FROG - Didnt they make a VC10 with working lights?

Speaking of models - Where me and also my family all grew up in London, nearby there was a small airfield (closed before I was born) called Heston. They had a model makers there too. The name escapes me now though.
