“He just won’t run.” Steve commented as Shiro stood in the starting gate and watched as the other two year olds ran out towards the finish line. Luckily, it was only a practice break but this was the fourth time this month, Shiro refused to break from the gate. Matthew’s father had been trying everything to coax the handsome grey to run but nothing seemed to change his mind. He had even bucked off a few of the jockey’s who had been a little hard handed with him.

“I guess he’s just gonna be a pasture pony then… he’s got one of the best pedigree’s for running.” Isabella sighed as one of the grooms unsaddled the horse and cleaned him up.

Adelaide was walking by with Thunder when she overheard the conversation and stopped to watch the colt move around before sliding into the conversation.

“Have you thought about other sports? I know most of the thoroughbreds here are for racing, but he’s smart enough to try something else.” She offered and both of the owners turned to look at her with a similar wonderment to her question.

“Well… we have been trying to expand into other sports too. Perhaps dressage? Or show jumping? Optimus and Thunder are great but the more with our stable name attached to them the better, right?” Isabella asked and Steve turned to look back at Shiro whose ears were swerving towards Thunder who was snorting.

“It’s worth a shot. I would hate to seem him just stuck in the pasture for the rest of his days. Adelaide, why don’t you take him out tomorrow and see how he feels about some minor jumps. Nothing too large. Just see if he refuses them. I talk to Matthew about trying to teach him some minor dressage stuff. Let’s see if he takes to anything.”

Adelaide walked the grey stallion out to the mounting block and climbed onto his back and settled into her seat. Equipped with some extra padding around her elbows and knees just in case she did fall, the pair were ready for take off. She spurred the grey horse to trot around the arena then asked for a little more speed and then a little more. With every lap around the arena she asked for a little more and Shiro responded. Steve stood by the gate and watched as the pair headed for the first jump set up. It was barely above knee height, nothing higher. Adelaide held her breath as Shiro easily jumped over it and kept moving. He never faltered and slowed to a trot as Steve and Chris, one of the new riders, ran out and raised the height to about belly button level. They jogged back out as Adelaide asked for more once again and Shiro sailed over the jump. Landing on his feet and keeping his head held high. Adelaide waited until the colt had cooled off before trotting over to Steve who stood with a pleased look on his face.

“So… not a racer, but a jumper?”
