That's understandable. In my fan universe, some Piranah plants are as feral as you describe them. But others are more clever and actually have an alignment. Petey being one of them since he obviously is competent and is aware of what he is doing. He has even spoken (in his own language) in Paper Mario Color Splash. But there's nothing wrong if you like the idea of them being more wild and ravenous. Every fan is allowed to have their own interpitation of Mario's world and what is in it.😀
