Hope it's not too late for this to be relevant.Seeing Gorillaz' outstanding new music video (here , if you haven't checked it out), I simply HAD to do something about it. The immediate idea I got was this layout, which seemed maybe a tad challenging, but it just wouldn't look good enough without all of the stuff I crammed in.

Okay, thank you, and I certainly don't mind. In the future (and not just for my art) you probably should really ask about these things before using them, though. Plenty of people don't appreciate hearing about this stuff afterwards.

Thank you! As a matter of fact, yes, you'd be right about that. I'm not the fastest pixel artist around either.
If you actually are interested,Β I never really pay much attention to how many hours I spend on these things exactly, but I got the idea to do this a day or so after the music video's release.
Essentially, I slowly made all of the elements piece by piece over the course of about 2 weeks then had a good day and finished almost all of the second part of the animation (just the animation, the BG and character sprites were already done) on the day I ended up posting it.

There have been Gorillaz fanart everyday for two years now, I've watched enough fan clubs to see that... It's just that every time Noodle returns, there's an explosion of fanart dedicated to her. :Y But people won't stop adoring the band here on deviantART, don't worry. :y

Actually, in terms of effort-to-reception the recognition has been surprisingly big, but it really seems to depend a LOT on the website.
What I mean is, I posted this on DeviantArt, Tumblr and Twitter - here it's been moderately noticed, but on Twitter it got just 2 likes, and on Tumblr it blew up to the point where it's at almost 6.000 notes and still not done - so much so that the official GorillazxElectronicBeats campaign asked me if they could post it on their Instagram.
Frankly, I've begun to think of it as sort of a fluke.

Twitter is more towards finding familiar people to follow, whereas Tumblr is about publicly sharing interests with the community, so yep. :Y
Congratulations on your work's success though, it sure is worth the determination... ^^
