Description EDIT 1/9/2012- ZOMG, it's done and all colored, and turned out a lot better than I thought it would, I'm so proud of this. I know there's mistakes, but this is really such a personal milestone for me, now not only in start on the computer, but in my coloring technique. tried to do the shading as if it's all underwater, and I think that effect turned out really cool (save for some spots that got a bit too messy or not blending enough, but sadly I can't go back and tweak it > >). I also liked how this looked without any line arts, which I didn't plan.

upon submitting, I noticed some problems with the line art in relation with the color (most notably the fish fins at the bottom area), but when I went back to the PS file, turns out I didn't save it, I only saved the PNG here. so yeah, sorry about those little mistakes, I'd fix them if I could > >.

WIP screenshot thing is here

EDIT 1/3/2012 - finalized the line art more. I need to get used to pressure sensitivity in the line art more, or adjust my brush in Sai a bit, as I like some line width variation, but I feel as if there's too much differences in line width on parts her

also I just spotted some line art mess ups a bit after uploading (most notably around the big fins at the bottom), I'll fix those in a bit. otherwise i love how it's turning out,

since I keep updating with the steps I'm doing on this, I'll also upload a wip snapshot of all this after it's done.

wait a minute, this is only a rough sketch, why am I uploading it? because 1, to show activity here, and 2, because I'm so proud of this rough sketch, which is my first sketch that I totally started and did only with the tablet, no scanned line art like all my previous works, and I wanted you guys to see this before I go on to finalize it with clean line art and coloring/shading

funny, I ending up drawing something totally different than I planned for my yugioh fan art. Watt monsters in YuGiOh are cool and all, but I was totally blown away in awe when I got my hands on a Gishki deck from ebay. info on the archetype can be seen here [link] . I may still do a Watt fan art, but not feeling it as of now.

back to the Gishki deck, gosh, the card type playability, the bringing back of the ritual monsters to the point of competitive usability, great recycling potential from graveyard to hand, the aqua theme and the card designs. this gishki deck is now by far my favorite. sorry for the yugioh nerding there, moving on

I think the designs are really some of Yugioh's finest in this archetype, particularly because I have a great facination with sea life, and the cards make such good use of the inspirations

monsters here are
Evigishki Mind Augus [link]
Ghiski Abyss [link]
Gishki Chain [link]
Gishki Vanity [link]
Gishki Shadow [link]
Gishki Ariel [link]
Evigishki Soul Ogre [link]

I'll update this when it's all done with clean line art and coloring/shading. I'm so excited to finalize this more

So, this was clearly made quite a while ago, but I FREAKING LOVE GISHKI!!! This is phenomenal, you did such a great job! I'm working on a Gishki Playmat myself, I can only hope it will be at least half as good as this!

Looks awesomely wicked cool. I can't wait for Hidden Arsenal 6 to come out so I can finish my Gishki deck.

heh, thanks. and yeah, same here, several of the great supporters haven't been translated. and also some of the better rituals haven't been translated yet. not sure which ones come with hidden Arsenal 6, but I want Vision Gishki , Evigishki Levianima , and Evigishki Zealgigas translated already

marktheshark274 In reply to CaptnPenguin [2012-02-20 22:00:16 +0000 UTC]

Hidden Arsenal 6 will have Vision Gishki, Gishki Shellfish, Gishki Emilia, Gishki Noellia, Gishki Reliever, Evigishki Tetrogre, Evigishki Gustkrake, and Evigishki Merrowgeist. There will also be a few support cards, particularly Forbidden Arts of the Gishki and Ceremonial Mirror of Illusion.

We gotta wait until Hidden Arsenal 7 for Levianima and Zealgigas. Let's hope it comes out this December. If only Konami didn't drag their feet for so long.

a good amount it seems, but not all the ones I want in Hidden Arsenal 6. I want to maintain the hand advantage, why I mainly want my Levianima for the draw effect, and Zealgigas for that 3200 beatstick as well it's draw/bounce to deck effect that's not just limited to face up cards like Soul Ogre. Vision Gishki and Forbidden Arts will be good help, and the other rituals offer some variations in Gishki strategy. but yeah, Konami has had their share of flops and laziness

Hi I'm from #Anime-Turf and as part of the Critique Corner, I will be critique your work! Hopefully I will give some useful advice.

First off, wow, wow, wow! so much detail and colors! So much hard work was put into this it truly shows.
The coloring, shading and especially the creature at the bottom's fins super!!

Some things that could be improved on;

The lineart blends into together, making it difficult to really see each character. especially the middle characters. I know you said that you were trying out different pen pressures so I suggest you practice a bit with that more.

Over all this is an amazingly detailed piece, i just want to look at it to see all the details. Keep on drawing you're an amazing artist.

CaptnPenguin In reply to Yukiko-berrie [2012-01-16 17:28:00 +0000 UTC]

well, hey there, first off, thank ya, I'm glad you like the amount of details, and nah, this actually wasn't that hard, though it certainly was trying a lot of new stuff

that most likely has nothing ot do with the pen pressures actually and more likely to do with the lowered opacity of the line art. at full opacity the pure black outline was standing out way too much, so I lowered it, but I probably lowered it too much, and the blending in is bound to happen due to shading it all on the same layers with the same colors, it may be at a low opacity, but it still makes the colors blend a bit more. thanks for the feedback, and delighted you think I'm a decent artist XD

yayayayay, delighted you think so, and nah, I can't finalize it more though I'd like to a bit, as the PSD file didn't save properly, so I can't go back and edit.

and thank ya

heh, but it was fun, and believe it or not, this actually didn't take all that long, once I got the solid colors in, I did all the shading and touch ups in a single sitting for a few hours >3<.

and thanks a lot, I think the colors turned out really interesting looking here too due to the way it was shaded >3<

holy smokes lineart of doom XD This is very impressive, for using pen pressure your lines are very consistent even at the ends of the strokes.

In any case I'd kill to see this colored.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptnPenguin In reply to deLunela [2012-01-04 15:52:56 +0000 UTC]

oh my, I really appreciate that, and heh, I feel it's actually rather inconsistent, so that's very reassurring. no worries, color is on the way, no need to kill for it XD

Even though I'm not a fan of Yu gi oh I wanted to leave a comment here 'cause I know what's like to feel proud about something you do directly on a tablet. I always scan my linears so the first time I directly sketched on my tablet I felt so proud of myself!!!

I would love to see the finished version

CaptnPenguin In reply to Lucceira [2012-01-02 19:58:25 +0000 UTC]

heh, glad I'm not just crazy then XD. I was like "WHOA!!! I started and did this all on the computer!!! NO WAI!!! "

it was intimidating at first, but now I find it easier than starting on paper, it's like learning how to ride a bike at first or something, you feel super good when you can actually do it after being scared about it for a while

and same here, I can't wait to finish this

Lucceira In reply to CaptnPenguin [2012-01-03 22:52:20 +0000 UTC]

I envy you, it's still so difficult for me to draw using the tablet...

Great improvement over the sketch!

CaptnPenguin In reply to Lucceira [2012-01-04 00:17:42 +0000 UTC]

heh, don't envy me, I've had a tablet for a whole year now, and it took me that long to actually start a work solely on the computer without scanned line art

and heh, thanks a lot, the sketch was just to determine the composition and overall posing and such

Oooh. I don't play yugioh but these monsters look really neat. I can't wait to see the final version of this.

Considering how diverse sea life is, it's awesome for inspiration.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptnPenguin In reply to SnowboardingTaco [2012-01-02 06:15:28 +0000 UTC]

heh, thanks, I really can't wait to finish this either, I want to see it all done just as much, not because I'm rushing, but because I think it's going to turn out so nice and working on it was really much more fun than any other project on my plate at the moment, if that makes any sense.

yeah, not too many play yugioh, least no one that I know on DA. I actually did compete in tournaments for yugioh for quite a while, but there's no longer a close by tournament. the monster designs is what actually got me into yugioh when it first came out, and I've loved the diversity in designs they've done throughout the years just as much as I do pokemon, though for different reasons than pokemon XD

oh yeah, I definitely agree with that, sea life is really the best and most fun for inspiration, least I think so

SnowboardingTaco In reply to CaptnPenguin [2012-01-02 06:34:12 +0000 UTC]

Two of my online friends LOVE yugioh. I know for sure one of them played in tournaments.

Totally. I almost know as much about fish as I do pokemon. They're amazing.

oh, that's awesome !!

heh, I used to know a ton about fish, but I forgot a lot of the facts. I do visually remember a lot of the fish and other sea life though. and indeed they are amazing.
