Research says that the dark lane across the galaxy itself is a smaller galaxy that was cannibalized or swallowed by NGC 5128. I'm jealous you can get shots of these southern areas of the sky.

Ahhhh Cen A <3. One of the closes (if not the closest radio galaxies to earth) at only 3-5 Mpc away!! Nice picture

My favorite galaxy, Greg! You did a very good job with the image processing, the galaxy's colors come out nicely and smoothly. The star field is lovely as well.

I wish my camera could take pictures of galaxies. But I can't even get decent star pictures. What camera do you have to have to do this. It is something I have always been wanting to be able to do.

It's not so much the camera that is important with astrophotography but it helps a bit. I have a Canon 1000D and a Canon 60D. The real key is a telescope on a computerised mount that can counter the earths rotation to keep the object in the frame. My setup for this sort of work cost about $5000. If you want to capture the stars with just a camera then ideally you need a camera in which you can dial in an exposure between 20 to 30 seconds, an aperture value as low as possible (3.5 to 5) and an ISO as high as possible without producing to much noise. Send me a note if you want with what sort of camera you have and what settings you have got on it and I might be able to give you some advice on how best to capture the stars.

well, my camera is a hand-me-down so the original owner showed me how to take pictures of the stars, but I may still need your advice so I will ask after I take some photos of the night sky. Then I will know what to ask.

I appreciate that you have offered, and will definitely take you up on it as soon as I have tried and probably failed to take a decent picture. I am a real amateur photographer. So I appreciate any help someone like you can give me.
