Description Rift Wars is a new game mode within the game Heroes of Newerth. In this mode (which is 5v5), each participant can pick a single starting hero and two additional "ability shuffle" heroes. The abilities of all the chosen heroes will then be shuffled and assigned to the player's hero at random. This means that, while all the heroes look like the originals, each hero will have a completely unique and random set of abilities. Not only that, but when the hero dies, it will respawn with a new random set of abilities. It is designed to be a just-for-fun, pure chaos mode.

When I drew the sketch for this illustration I had the old DotA loading screens in the back of my head. I tried to emulate the feel that those pieces had and I hope I succeeded in that! It was a lot of work but also surprisingly fun to work on (especially Geomancer, which is the centipede-esque creature at the top left, currently performing a Valkyrie's leap ability)!

I wanna see what you're working on for Karmaflow! Also I can probably show you a few progress steps some time. In short it was sketch - value sketch - rendering,  I rendered each hero in turn and kind of worked on the background as I moved along the piece.

Well, there's some stuff on our Facebook-page
Cool! Especially composition would be a challenge with so much characters I can imagine.
Anyway, fun (and a bit frustrating tbh xD) to see how you're improving, just comparing this one with your first painting for S2 really shows you're getting better.

Daaaaaaaaamn, steppin' it up like nobody's business! This is great- I love rocket launcher wizard going on in the top right, haha, and the tortoise guy in the foreground is really nicely drawn and painted, super tasteful rimlight. Awesome to see you attempting something of this scale, I think you pulled it off really well!

Only thing I would mention is that while all the individual characters work great, I think some of the big picture composition got a little busy- simplifying and silhouetting some of the characters with narrower value ranges would probably help the overall readability, especially on a small scale. [Link] is a pretty good example; there's a lot of complexity, but for the most part the characters are contained in their own value ranges and the bigger silhouettes helps the big composition. Easier said than done cause managing value with this many characters is a nightmare, but something to think about over a few months, haha.

Overally though this is really great work; it's got great action and dynamic energy, and I think the complexity of the piece actually helped you to not over-render which resulted in some really lovely markmaking, especially on tortoise guy and the smoky black spirits. Lion guy's forward-facing leg looks really great too. Great work, you're killing it!

Thanks so much Andan! The link you gave me isn't working (that is, I can't view the image) but I'd love to see it because even though I kept switching to greyscale to keep track of the values it was giving me a lot of trouble. What you say makes a lot of sense, too.

Thanks again, and for the awesomely awesome crits as always <33.

Hmm, that's odd, let me know if this one works: www.blizzplanet.com/wp-content…

And yeah, you definitely handled the values well cause everything reads at full scale, and it might even be personal taste that makes me crave some bigger silhouettes, but I think some bigger silhouettes might let you focus attention on two or three main characters and help it read better at a small size. If that link works, I think it's a good example cause there's a mix of silhouetting methods- some of the characters are really strong dark-on-light silhouettes, and some are lit-side against dark shadow-side against light silhouettes. Just somethin' to think about.

Ahhh, yeah! That's a pretty awesome illustration. I see what you mean about the silhouettes, makes a lot of sense. Thanks so much for pointing it out, I think that's definitely going to help me out with my future pieces! :>
