Description

Made in Blender 2.8

Since I realized that you can't or shouldn't use soft bodies for everything I also plan to use mesh deform cages, as the one you can see in the gif above. It looks like a lattice but it isn't, it's originally a cube mesh. I first wanted to use lattices but then found out that you can't use any specific meshes as a lattice, but you can do that with the mesh deform modifier. This gif is a bad example sind the deform cage is still a box, but it could've had any other form as well.

I think it's the same as a lattice but better, the only downside is that you have to calculate the binding once, which can take a bit of time.

I first watched Blender 2.8 Lattice Modifier - Same Tool, Different Version, Learn It Now and Use it Forever on lattices which suggested squeezing as one of its usages, then the short explanation of the mesh deform modifier in the official blender 2.8 manual , and finally All Blender 2.8 modifiers explained. (updated) (but only the parts where he explains the lattice- and mesh deform modifier).

You can see the result in the gif, it shows a UV-sphere that I made a bit thicker in the middle squeezing through a torus.

It still required a bit of animating, but it's probably still way better than having to do that with the actual object, and also it's non destructive.

In order to be able to animate it though you have to enable the addon Animation: AnimAll (short explanation in How to keyframe Animate in Edit mode in Blender ), since you can't keyframe edits made in edit mode in default blender.
