"It's been already five maybe six months since I joined the coven, it's hard to keep track of time here since witches dont use any form of time reference, we are suposed to let the time flow freely and use it wisely without trapping it in the machinations of a clock or a calendar,I have to admit is pleasing to be free from the constraints of a schedule but its hard to keep track of any kind of progress you have been working on, in my case its my offensive magic, I want to master it soon as possible I want to be powerful and unstopable, but I hit a wall in my progress I simply can't overcome it, so I asked for the coven's great father...more like begged, for him to help me with that so he gave me an old tome to read, its a relic from the mages era itself, I'm reading it but I'm protecting this with my life! since this book surely worths more than me...
To study it I had to find a time away from my master, I love her and everything she did for me but she is too noisy and too agitated to keep around, she dont values studies since she is naturally talented...But I'm not! so I waited the dawn when she sleeps and I found quiet place over a hill to study my tome, at the start I was getting it but in the latter pages it gets really complicated and technical, this book was part of the regular studies of a mage student, they had like a "school of magic" in that era, with masters and classes and everything, here I have none of it...I imagine things were easier in that time.
While I was trying to wrap my peasant brain around that book someone was approaching, it was Mother Brena, one of the matriarchs of the coven, even being heavily pregnant she walked like a queen, she walked that trail with impressive ease,She sat in the rock near to me and I greeted her in the best way I could since I'm not used to talk with the "authorities" of the coven:
- Good morning mother Brena, what brings you to this hill?
- Good morning Blues, I heard that you have been struggling with your magic recently and I got curious to know why.
- Oh!...so I've been practicing very hard my spell casting, it was getting more powerful everyday and my control of the entropy was improving, but in the last weeks I feel stuck, nothing improved, no breaktroughs and I have no idea of how to fix it...
- I've seen you breaking some rocks, your offensive skills are remarkable for a initiate...but I have to ask, why you crave so much to be powerful? you are here among us for 3 seasons already and all you seem to do is fervorously destroy stuff, why you walk such narrow path young one?
- I don't want to be stepped on anymore Mother Brena...in my childhood I was the punch bag of my mother and later my husband treated me like cattle, now I finally have something that makes me special something to defend myself!
- My dear, magic is not a revolver, offensive spells aren't bullets to fire mindlessly into your foes...Magic is not always about destruction and powerful spells, sometimes its about protecting what we love...
As she said that, she touched her huge belly gently caressing it and showing me a magic sigil she put on herself,and I asked about that:
- Mother brena what are those sigils in your tummy? what they mean? and why they only appear when you touch them?
- So you have interest in other forms of magic! these are hand sigils, I make them only with my magic that's why they aren't normally visible, they are to protect my children from curses sickness and to bring good luck! just small magical tricks a witch mother have to know about...if you have interest I can teach everything about it.
- With all due respect I have no interest in children Mother Brena...
- I've heard you had a tough experience with maternity before joining the coven, I understand what you are feeling young one...you were from the crusader kingdoms weren't you?
- Yes...
- Another young lady forced into maternity by the ever hungry war machine of Omaro and his zealots, what they are doing there is beyond cruel, girls being forced to give birth one child after another like insects, and boys being sacrificed like fresh meat in the grinder of the eternal war...and it seems to get worse every passing day...
- This brings back to my point Mother Brena, the church is growing in power everyday, witch hunters are roaming dangerously near to the coven lately and as far I understand they are really tough enemies, I dont want to disrespect you experience but, this aint the proper time for witches prepare for war? aint this the moment were sharpen our offensive skills to the maximum? aint the time to let all the other arts for the peace time and focus on our survival?
-Yes you are right, but not in the way you are imagining, we have many enemies that can't be beaten by raw power, like by example the witch hunters you mentioned, try facing one only with offensive spells, you will watch your most powerful spells barely scratch their armour before they put a crossbow bolt in to your heart! but in the other hand you can try to use a small spell to bring rain over the forest making their heavy equipment bog in the mud and then call the spirits of the trees to raise and crush them,or call a pack of wild beasts to feast on their flesh!
- I haven't imagined that possibility...
- What I want to say is, be open minded! your wand is not a rifle it's a key for every door in this world and maybe even in others! magic is not a exact science its an fluid art that goes all around in the craziest ways, so be flexible learn all kinds of spells potions and sigils even the ones that seem useless, you never know what you will need in your path to become a battle witch!"
