my fav is actually lead(graphite)pencil, then pastels, then charcoal(i think i may even have a few listed in my scraps) though i seldom ever work with them anymore since i found paint on canvas is easier to ship and i get the most money for. i have been using acrylics for over 20 years and am most comfortable with them, but i started using oils(which i am not so good with) about three or four years ago and am doing my best to master oils!

Pastels! I've tried them--but they did not like me. (grin) I also love charcoal--I can see why they'd be hard to ship--smudging and all. I haven't tried oils, yet--they're a little scary to me. I'm most comfortable with acrylics, pen&ink, and with colored pencil.

i found rembrandt pastels to be dreamy, others i care nothing much for using, but rembrandt are like silk they are so smooth and rich, i think you would be shocked with them. i also use a 'workable fixatuve' that prevents the smudging. for acrylic, i used to have to use a belnding medium to help make them dry slower so i could blend with them, but am so fast now i can do without. when painting large pieces & furniture i use a spray bottle with water and sometimes drying medium called an extender, to keep the surface slightly damp while i am working. for oils: i have found a medium called liquitex that helps it dry FAST that helps me blend. i also paint with very thinned paints to get details i prefer. i am not good at all with water color or at least i am not pleased with them, since i like more control than they alllow. i do love the way they look when someone besides me uses them!lol iliked pen and ink too,but had to use them for job's so that spoiled my pleasure in using them!lol colored pencils are as fun as anything to me and i really loved using them with a brush and water too. you can get pastel's in a pencil for fine detailing too!

Thank you so much for your insight and comments. I am excited about trying pastels in pencil form. The kind I once tried were in big thick sticks. You couldn't get much detail from them--and I really enjoy detail. I shall have to try the rembrandt you speak of!
So, you paint furniture!!! Wow! The biggest things I've painted are side panels for several of the plays my husband and I write and perform. I stretched linen over a 4x8 frame made out of pvc pipe. Then I painted 'em, with a combination of house paints, and (ha!) acrylics. I've always wanted to try oils--the one time I did try them, I just couldn't get the results I'd imagined I would. I'm much more comfortable with acrylics. I like the idea of being able to keep the surfaces I work on moist so that more thought can be taken with blending--although, like you, I've been doing acrylics for so many years, I can usually get the results I want very quickly.

I have to tell you--do you know of an artist who was loved by President Eisenhower? I can't remember his name, but he paints deserts with these amazing pastel colors. When my family and I were traveling back East a few years ago, we stayed in a humble little home. On the walls of this place were masterpieces done by masters I recognized, including four or five paintings done by the artist I spoke of above... (sigh) It was strange--close up, the pictures weren't that great--but the moment I'd step back a few feet....WOW.

perhaps it could have been paintings by Paul Grimm???[link] seems he painted studio backdrops in california and is famous for desert scenes... eisenhower was a collector of his work. i can imagine his painting is probably most magnificant from a disatnce as you describe, as much oil painting often is.
rembrantd pastels are the thick chunks also but they are so creamy they go on like silk and you can also use pastel pencils with them. they make detail work heavenly! you might enjoy seeing some fabulous detailed (pastel cat) art by another artist on ebay -

Thank you! (grin) By the way, I do believe it was Paul Grimm's work I saw...I remember reverently touching each masterpiece--just to say I'd done so. The paintings should be in a museum. I couldn't believe I was actually able to do what I was doing--touching the work of a master.
And then I told this lovely pastor and his wife to have the paintings appraised, and to get some kind of an alarm system for their home. They had other amazing works in their home as well--there was one of an old time ship in the waves of a storm, which was magnificent--an old oil. She said it had been her grandmother's, and bore the signature of a great artist--who's name escapes my mind at the moment.
Life is such an adventure, one never knows who or what one will run into!!! (Grin) By theway...thank you for the links! Wow--you are right--I am inspired, too.

Very cute, but what fluffy kitten isn't? The light and "fluffy" brush strokes of the piece really set the mood it think. If glomps of color and hard, very opaque stroked were used, one wouldn't get the feeling of wanting reach through the computer screen and cuddle the cute guy! Also, great choice of complementary object in the painting too. A nice fragile peice of china to go with the fargile kitten. I love this piece! I think I'll fav it and go check the rest of your gallery.
