i think shabazik wanted them to have a bohemian/hungarian style, but the ones i drew here are pretty simply based on civil war designs, with some extra layers for the cold.

possibly even more XVII century, as the civil war was in the 1640s... i should probably have gone for a round kettle helmet, i suppose, to make them look a bit earlier. what do you think of the cabasset helmet? apparently they came in in the mid sixteenth century...
i do like the swords, though - they aren't as big and children's-toy-like as medieval swords, with their massive hilts and overlong blades. i like the idea of a shorter, simple sword, issued in great numbers to simple soldiers who prefer to use them for chopping wood.
i also didn't want to just imitate a certain historical period too perfectly, since this is a fantasy world, so i wanted to create a little distance between the historical and the fantastical, by using models which weren't taken straight from medieval sources. (just as derwen and briallen's clothes and culture is not a direct imitation of any one historical period)

X3
well, I originally writed XVI-XVII century, but suddendly I doubted if teh Civil War (of england) was when... So to be safe I only put XVI century
(because, is also XVII century the uniforms used in the end of it, who are more related to the ones used across the XVIII century :3)
But, if you like these swords instead of mediaval swords, you can use instead "scramsax" or the latter, similar weapons! There where many infantry mass produced weapons, meanwhile swords is what mostly remain, because they where costly and passed across generations! Meanwhile these mass produced infantry weapons where melted and re-done again! X3
I know what you mean, but as well certain armors and helms give an "air" to a fantasy piece:
And when I see these soldiers, I think of the Religions wars, and even the 30 years war! XD
So, if you intent to give them a more "dark age" era, you can try and blend weapons and armors from different countries, civilizations and ages between the V and XV century!
Buy if is otherwise, had least for people like me who like military history, it would look as fantasy... but settled in a XVI-XVII era! :3
For the helms, I envisioned the Purpurian infantrymen with Eisenhut or "kettle hats" [link] (but look for other kettle hats, as that photo in the article is a modern british helm! X3) or maybe you can use a Sallet:
[link]
a soldier using this type of helm, [link] wich partially covers you face, can look particulary evil!
