Thanks man,I loved back then when you didn't knew much about characters, so it did leave a lot to the imagination and interpretation.

I know what you mean man, somehow everything had more value back then.
Now hundreds of new games are released everyday and I couldn't care less about almost all of them.

Well, I think it's a bit more complicated then that... even if I agree that old games rock! No shitty 20€ day one DLC, 4 hours long obligatory updates, no solo campaign without obligatory registering or online code!

But back to old games, I think we prefer old games because we always think of old CLASSICS which passed the test of time and happily forget shitty old games.
Exemple : DOOM (everybody knows it, loves it, people still play it today, a true classic)
Depth Dwellers (a shitty doom clone that everybody forgot except LGR : www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSeLXm… )

I found a comment on a forum that I think explains greatly my point of view about old games:
"For FF VII..I think one of its greatest strength as well as weakness is that it leaves a big chunk of room for interpretation. Wether it's the characters appearance due to the puppetlike in game figures or some sketchy parts of the story (eg Jenova).
Not like in todays video games, where everything is explicitly shown in high definition and voice actors leave not doubt about the tone of a conversation, the older FFs left room for our fantasy.
And our fantasy and imagination filled some of the space. It created faces of characters who had no detailed appearance. Our fantasy guessed the tone of conversations.
But like with a book the imagination of each player is different and this leads to some problems once a game gets more detailed (remake) or the fantasy of few (SE) gets set in stone without any room for interpretation (AC).
Not everyone will get satisfied. Like in LotR some of the shown movie will contradict our own fantasy. Some can cope with it, some not."

I completely agree with that!Β
There were loads of bad and unplayable games back then.Β
What I miss most is the fact that when a good game finally came around through the unplayable games mess it was like a gem. You could play it for months and enjoy it to its fullest.Β
Now I find myself playing some games and switching to a new one after a week never finishing the other one and the cycle goes on.Β
Of course we have gems in this casual gamer's "next-gen" era. But I feel like they are far less frequent and far between and almost always less exciting.Β
Even the hit games are branded. For example the next GTA is guaranteed to be a hit. There is a trend of how a good game should be like. For example if you can manage to make a good competitive multiplayer FPS game, millions will buy and play it no matter what. And its popularity will inevitably create a toxic online community and ruin the experience which will eventually ruin the game experience. Overwatch and Fortnite are good examples for this. Nothing's wrong with popular good FPS games but trends kill the variety and experimenting in the gaming industry.
Back then everything was new and experimental and some games were really fresh and a good surprise for the players.Β
In our present day games are products more than anything. Indie scene is what keeps gaming oldschool but I feel like even that will change in near future.

Also back in the days, games were made to be fun instead of "realistic"! That's the most stupid idea I have ever heard!
Exemple:
----------
Before : Having 9-10 weapons at the same time=> not realistic but fun!

Today : Having 1-2 weapons at the same time=> realistic but absolutely not fun; you're constantly throwing away guns!

That's exactly the problem with the new Duke Nukem game: only 2 weapons so you complete the entire game with only the shotgun(since you have it from the beginning) and the rocket launcher(since you cannot finish the bosses without it) and all the other fun weapons from the Duke arsenal are almost completely useless!!!
