Description
This was my entry for the “Sonic and the Black Knight” fan art contest. If you watch the game’s video montage of art from American and Canadian artists, mine is the first one shown.[link]
The scene is from the beginning of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, when Knuckles appears for the first time. Super Sonic and Tails have just entered Angel Island. Knuckles pops out of nowhere and knocks Super Sonic down, making Sonic drop all his emeralds and revert back to normal. This is the instant between when Sonic gets knocked down, and when Knuckles picks up all the emeralds and runs off.
This is the first picture I ever did where I colored the lineart. I kind of stumbled into it by accident, but I really liked the results.
The background isn’t a literal interpretation of the background you see in the game during this scene, but I looked at screenshots and tried to make it recognizable as the Angel Island Zone.

I will say...that is impressive for Knuckles to do. I mean, he just jumped out of the ground and Shoryukened the Chaos Emeralds out of SUPER SONIC...SUPER...SONIC! That is no small feat to pull off. I mean, Doctor Eggman managed to do it, but only with the help of some kind of special energy draining machine in Sonic Unleashed. Knuckled PUNCHED the Chaos Emeralds out of his body. O_O...I think the act speaks for itself; Knuckles is not one to mess around with.

That animation’s adorable. It reminds me of the sort of Sonic cartoon that I fantasized about as a kid: bouncy and comical, while largely retaining the style and feel of the Genesis games.

Thanks, Beau. I tried my darndest to capture the zone. It's one of my favorites, but I had to study screenshots to really remember what it looked like.

Nice, but I think you kinda messed up Sonic's hands. If you put your arms the way Sonic does, you'll notice that the thumbs are in the wrong place on the pic. (At least the way I see it.) Just thought I'd point it out so that you can improve on your next pics.

Well at least someone drew Tails actually flying instead of off in the distance in that plane because to some artists, that is SO not what happened! Anyway, nice pic.

Thanks. I've always been a Knuckles fan, and I really liked that game, so the scene of Knuckles' first appearance really appealed to me when it popped into my head. I think it's important to show Tails at the scene. I don't know why someone would draw him off in the distance.
