Description This is a detailed commission of the lesser known Marvel Character Sat-yr-nin (also spelt Sat-yr-9)

The brief was to create a pinup of this character together with a hostage girl and a detailed background. I found out that the character was a British dictator so thought an apocalyptic London cityscape would be cool to draw. Wow I’ve seen big ben plenty of times but never really appreciated quite how much detailing there is on the building until now!!!

Thanks for looking

Hi Carl,

At the moment your Sat-Yr-9 art is the most viewed post this week.

Love the other two pieces you've done, I'll post them over the next couple of days on my Blog.

Hmm, seriously thinking of a commission....

Ooooh nice! I love that background - so much detail!

The only thing is (and I hope you don't mind me saying this) the outline on the hostage seems to be thicker than the main character. Although there's more detail in Sat-yr-nin's outfit etc., she doesn't seem to stand out as much as the hostage...
I'm sure this is probably something you've done intentionally, but I thought I'd point it out just in case

Carl-Riley-Art In reply to LahmiaRaven [2009-09-03 12:30:10 +0000 UTC]

thanks, I really wanted to go all out on the detail of big ben... hopefully it was worth the effort. Yea I've not been posting too much recently, its kinda hard to strike a balance between family, work and a bit of drawing when i can. 1 off commissions are good tho as i can set the deadline from the start so people know where they stand.

Yea Alex is doing great thanks, getting bigger and stronger every day. Bit of a tummy bug at the mo but still a happy little fella.

i couldnt help chucking in a few alex related things in to the commission too... the time on big ben (5:18) was the exact time he was born. there's a piece of machienery just below the wheel of the taxi with the name 'ALEX 1.0'. oh and the number plate on the taxi is JR4CR or Jennie Riley for Carl Riley.....sad i know

So howz things with you... got over the pig flu i take it? I see you've been posting some kick a$$ inks, great work with those! the stuff with and really rocked

Aww that's good to hear, I'm glad Alex is doing well!

Hehe, I think when you draw and you have a family, you might put lots of things that remind you of things to do with your own life, I think that's what makes everyones art unique. It's not sad, it's cute

Yeah things are going ok, finally sorting my back problems out and the pig flu only lasted about 5 days! I'm glad though, it was horrible when I had it but it's just like a normal flu to be honest. Thanks man! I worked my ass off doing those, especially the more really detailed piece. I love Mike's work, I'll be doing more of them soon

Oh damn! I remember Sat-yr-9 from the X-Men cards in the early 90's. Bravo on this one, dude, that background is KILLER! Also the spotting of blacks throughout the piece looks great. Well done!

Carl-Riley-Art In reply to SquirrelShaver [2009-09-03 12:13:37 +0000 UTC]

Cheers Mike! Wow, I really didnt think anyone would know who Sat-yr-9 was... she was difficult to research as there was very little on the web. hope i did her justice tho. Glad ye dig the background... damn that took some time!!!

Very very cool.
If I had to comment on anything I'd say that your women look alike and something's wrong with the main one's right breast...
I absolutely love the background, you have a knack for those.

Carl-Riley-Art In reply to TheEitan [2009-09-03 12:08:49 +0000 UTC]

Cheers Eitan... you're right about the women i draw looking similar, thats an intentional thing thats happend through developing my 'style' as an artist. It probably also has a lot to do my main influences in comics like like Michael turner, Ebas & who have a familiar stlye to their female characters that almost creates a brand to their work.

Glad you like the background, a lota effort went in to that!!!... gotta get myself a light box some day

TheEitan In reply to Carl-Riley-Art [2009-09-03 12:15:38 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting. Mind if I ask why'd you choose to do that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carl-Riley-Art In reply to TheEitan [2009-09-03 12:56:05 +0000 UTC]

Not at all... I think its important to develop a recognizable style. My aim is not to make all female characters look exactly the same but to make them look similar in a way that’s unique to me. If I see a comic cover on the shelf by someone like Ebas I instantly know its by him without having to look at the signature or credits. The same goes for Mike Turner... perhaps more so with him.. if you look at his two main female characters there's Aspen ---> [link] and Grace --> [link] who basically looks like aspen with wings. I think that goes a bit too far but has been successful in creating the 'Turner brand' that lots of people know and love.

I still regard myself is very much in the early stages of comic art and my style is developing with everything i do. I prob don’t achieve the recognizable style thing as well as others but hopefully its getting there.

Cheers, dude
