Great portrait! Must put up some of my old pencil drawings up, used to do a lot but my eyes are pretty much shot when it comes to detail now!! (so much easier for me drawing on a big screen) !!!!!

Mine too, thanks to minute sculpture mainly. That's why I only (generally) do A3 now, lol. Thanks for the comment

This is absolute amazing! Please, any tips for an beginning artist? (of portraits)

Carl-Seager In reply to ScarlettJones [2011-11-25 12:35:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks and my only tip would be to lay out the drawing very carefully before you begin. Having said that there are many artists on here who do a better job than me so I should really suggest you ask them

ScarlettJones In reply to Carl-Seager [2011-11-25 14:53:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for the tip and to be truthful, I have ask really good artists about tips but YOU are one of the best I'v seen on here. I always like realstic art (more like portraits) better than anything else, and now I'm trying to do it
And no problem about the fav, but my gosh, I love twiggy (and Audrey, Monroe too) and I love drawings like these for some reason

You are so kind There is just one other thing which you may find useful. I always print out 3 or 4 copies of my reference pics in varioust states on contrast, right down to just black and white (no middle tones). Makes it so much easier to spot lows and highlights. This could be why my middle tones kinda go missing

Thank you!
Ah, i see, but my problem is shading when it comes to the lights and darks. See I only have one reg. pencil (2h) and It's so unbeleive of hard is it for me to shade(Epsically(Sp?) with the details in the eyes oh!). It's probably becuase I don't know how to but then I wonder, is there a certain way? i tired cross-hatching but I don't know how to apply it to the portrait, It's so hard
And also I'm compleatly a beininger in the arts, so if you did answer this question already, I'm so sorry I don't understand. (like some of the terms 'middle tones'or 'contrast)

Carl-Seager In reply to ScarlettJones [2011-11-25 18:11:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, a softer pencil might help you to get started. The 2H is perfect for laying the drawing out with very fine lines (which you can remove as you go) but I used a 2B on this right up till near the end where I refined a couple of things with an HB. The 2B can be used very sharp, to get the sharp edged lines you need in things like eye reflections, and then used blunt (with a rounded tip) to shade with very gentle pressure. My shading is usually built up from several layers all applied very softly...the darkness will build with more layers. Each layer being solid (lines which join against each other) and fade towards the edge till they disappear. I'm not sure I'm being much help here but I hope this gives you something to be getting on with. One more thing, take a look at this drawing (hope the link works) [link] as this artist's methods are very clear in their drawings. I love the way she builds up a pic and studying it for a while may give you a whole heap of information. Unlike me, she uses cross-hatching and she uses it beautifully, and simply.

Carl-Seager In reply to orientalbunny [2011-11-25 12:31:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Funny thing about the teeth...not to shade them but just leave them totally white. I think it kinda worked as too much detail elsewhere might have detracted from those eyes

orientalbunny In reply to Carl-Seager [2011-11-25 19:01:28 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I've always had a hard time with teeth. Letting her mouth provide the contrast color worked well since her skin is so fair, and lets the viewer focus on her gorgeous eyes and long lashes Plus, I liked how you cropped the drawing, it has a photo effect, like a dramatic close up and with the light outline of her cheek and hand implies that a lot of natural light is behind her.
