Great portrait! Must put up some of my old pencil drawings up, used to do a lot but my eyes are pretty much shot when it comes to detail now!! (so much easier for me drawing on a big screen) !!!!!

Well, a softer pencil might help you to get started. The 2H is perfect for laying the drawing out with very fine lines (which you can remove as you go) but I used a 2B on this right up till near the end where I refined a couple of things with an HB. The 2B can be used very sharp, to get the sharp edged lines you need in things like eye reflections, and then used blunt (with a rounded tip) to shade with very gentle pressure. My shading is usually built up from several layers all applied very softly...the darkness will build with more layers. Each layer being solid (lines which join against each other) and fade towards the edge till they disappear. I'm not sure I'm being much help here but I hope this gives you something to be getting on with. One more thing, take a look at this drawing (hope the link works) [link] as this artist's methods are very clear in their drawings. I love the way she builds up a pic and studying it for a while may give you a whole heap of information. Unlike me, she uses cross-hatching and she uses it beautifully, and simply.
