Pete Abernathy was a bad man. He took to the outlaw life rather than settle for honest work, robbing stagecoaches and banks, killing and stealing with abandon - until the day he was cut down in a blaze of gunfire during a botched robbery in the town of Irving. Left to die in the dusty street by his fleeing gang, Pete thought his short life was at an end. But death, it turned out, was not the end for him.

An elderly man approached him as he lay dying. The man had a long, flowing white beard and deep-set, piercing eyes. His wide-brimmed hat cast shadows across his face, but Pete could tell it was wrinkled and weathered by time.

"I've seen your wicked ways, Pete Abernathy," the old man said in a voice like the rustling leaves of a cottonwood tree. "You've lived a bad life, but I reckon there's a chance for redemption even for the likes of you."

Pete's eyes widened and he struggled to speak, but his strength was waning.

The old man continued, "I have an offer for you, Pete. You can pass on to the next life with your sins atoned for, but only if you become the guardian spirit of Irving. Protect the town and when your debt to the living is paid, I'll set you free."

Pete's breaths grew shallow as he listened. With a final, desperate nod, he agreed to the man's terms. The stranger - whoever he was- bound Pete's spirit to the pumpkin-headed scarecrow that stood watch over a field on the outskirts of town, bringing it to life and filling its carved face with eerie spectral fire.

From that day on, Pumpkinhead Pete became the town's guardian, protecting it against all kinds of troublemakers, from marauding bandits to rapacious land barons, to the eerie, otherworldly creatures that sometimes crept out of the desert at night, especially the sinister servants of The Desolation King
