It reminds me very much of a Greek statue, maybe because of the shading? It's a magnificent piece of artwork.

"Hauntingly beautiful" is the best way to describe this, and your other work, but even that terminology does not tell the whole story. "Eleven" seems to be pushed through a smokey, antique lens, a capture of an image that we were not meant to see. I enjoy how the plants, flowers, foliage all seem to be as much the subject of each painting... and really like the playfulness of your occasional "drop outs" so that color or shade does not touch one another (even some stray rays of light seem to "cut" through!). As with some of your other work, I assume this is also graphite, inks, and teas -- wonderful that we can still discern your pencil sketches through the delicate stains and inks! Beautiful. Hauntingly so.

yes it's a gentle piece despite the challenging elements of sin death and vulnerability

its a good reminder, isnt it. im a number 11 in numerology, so i shall take this reminder to live life to the full to heart. Be present, and not let it all slip by while im somewhere else in my head! THank you!

I looked up numerology as the start to this piece, fascinating

lol, i believeth not in coincidence.. maybe this piece will serve as a reminder to live life fully for others to! Can i ask what reference you used? im interested to check it out if thats possible!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Carnegriff In reply to hannahlily [2011-11-23 19:24:53 +0000 UTC]

haha you said believeth! i try and mix reference with drawings from my imagination.. the composition is freeform, the figure in eleven is from a rennaisance drawing - will find out who, the wings and foliage are made up - the skull is a real one I have in the studio - the snake is made up - the moth is from google images and all floral works are from imagination.

i do tend to add 'eth' on to the end of things.. it works a surprising amount of the time! (timeth.. maybe not!) why did you go with 11 numerology wise for this piece? And you have a skull.. how very sherlock of you!

Carnegriff In reply to hannahlily [2011-11-26 01:07:56 +0000 UTC]

skull..reminder of mortality - and the piece was finished 11/11/11 but for many other
reasons..
