Chapter 4: Rebirth of the Therapsid?

     "So what the hell was it?" Jack asked and drunk a bit of his mocha.

     They were all sitted on a table in a very quiet Starbucks, just being attacked by a beast of unparalleled ferocity and power, what better place to discuss the encounter?

     "It was a therapsid, a gorgonopsid" Philip said quietly, he never seemed to take his eyes off his Cappuccino on the table.

     "What the hell are you talking about? You mean we have a frikkin' dinosaur on the loose?" Jack said in disbelief.

     "Wait, what exactly is a Gorgon-something?" Joanna Goldblum asked.

     Joanna Goldblum was a young woman wearing casual jeans and a purple hooded shirt, a college student in the field of medicine. She's also been a good friend of Marty and Philip for a very long time. Besides being a college student in medicine, she is also a secret witch, sometimes practicing sorcery. Though Marty and Philip know of this, the topic has never been brought up.

     "No way man! Gorgonopsds are extinct, I think…" Austin Fastidio said with mixed feelings of excitement and anxiety.

     Austin Fastidio, a young though rather clumsy and comical man, was the lab assistant of Marty.

     "Well, in the evolutionary time line, in between reptiles and mammals were a very diverse and specialized group of creatures known as Therapsids or 'Mammal-like Reptiles'. These were reptiles that were in the process of evolving into mammals" Marty explained, "Most of them looked like a mix of both reptiles and mammals and share mixed characteristics too. They were mostly hairless of course, but shared more mammalian features than reptilian. For instance, they had more complex and powerful dental features than reptiles, being equipped with a complete set of mammalian teeth. Another key feature was the position of their legs. Instead of the reptilian style of being on the sides, therapsid legs were positioned directly under their bodies giving them more speed and agility over competitors"

     "So you think one of these things is out there?" Joanna asked.

     "We don't think once we see the damned thing itself. We know it. We saw it" Philip said.

     "Actually, I'd be very interested in whether it was looking for prey or if it was simply protecting its territory" Austin said to everyone's surprise. For once, Austin made a decent statement.

     "Or maybe it's out there looking for someone, targeting something?" Joanna suggested. There was a pause as every stopped to simply stare at her and her statement, "What?"

     "Look guys, I'd love to talk more about this but I've gotta go now" Philip said.

     "Yeah, time to go home" we all agreed.

     "Oh, Marty, you'll pay for my drink okay? Thanks" Austin said with an over-acting smile.

     "No damn"
