I always called the "Velociraptors" Deinonychus before the Jurassic Park movies

Well, they are actually two separate species.

So I was correct!! The dinosaurs I the movies were indeed Deinonychus and not Raptors! Once again Hollywood machinery chews up something and transforms it into something easy to sell to mass audiences.

Sort of. It's actually based on the whole re-classification done in "Predatory Dinosaurs of the World", which was what Crichton used when writing Jurassic Park. Deinoynchus is classified as a Velociraptor-species there.

yeah but the taxonomy shown in the movie dinosaur is the one of a Deinonychus and not the one of the Raptor. They had similarities but in the end the movie creature IS a Deinonychus. The person who wrote the article wonders Β if the movie creature had been named Deinonychus would've been equally famous. I seriously doubt it.

Yes, but it all started with "Predatory Dinosaurs of the World". I'm not sure if it wouldn't be less popular when named Deinonychus. Ofcourse Velociraptor rolls better of the tongue and can be shortened to Raptor...

To be fair, not everything about it is bad. It also helped to spread the Dinosaur Renaissance to the general public.

Yep. Without Jurassic Park, we probably would still have them thinking of Dinosaurs like experts thought of them during the 1950s or so.

Well, you can probably still find them...and old movies. There are also artbooks for some of the artists. And there is also a book called "Dinosaur Dioramas to cut out & assemble"...not to mention that old model kits from that age are often re-issued.

I have some books for kids from the early 80's I learned a lot from those books when I was 5 years old. My favorite dino movie is "Valley of Gwangi"

Valley of Gwangi? A classic!

I love Valley of Gwangi and there's another very old movie of a frozen caveman, a diplodocus and a T-rex found near and island. the iceΒ  melts and the three of them run amuck in the island. The caveman befriends a child and they both ride the diplodocus and the fight against the T-rex...that's all I can remember. I'd so like to see it again.

This was my favorite book when I was 5 years old.
