Sweet work. Sorry about your scanner, I know how important that is to the whole image.

Thank you Zindy! Yes, scanner is very important, especially in the small works that I do, I rely on it heavily.

It's amazing how much detail you can pack in such a small scale work. Very graceful and delicate. Lovely!

Thank you Joanna! Yes, I was hoping I caught that with the camera. I really like working with the iridescent acrylics. Really adds shimmer to the wings and clothing.

I really like all the detail in such a tiny space. I like the combined medium. It helps certain colors to pop out a little more.

Thanks Greg! I really like combining the 3 mediums together. I put the acrylic on last, so the iridescent colors shows up.

I do too. For several of my last pieces, I have used colored pencil, pastel, and acrylic. I use the pastel to help me even out larger background areas.

How do you like the pastels? I never could get the hang of using those. I think I would need to take a class or workshop on pastels to learn how to apply it and the techniques in using them. I ended up giving my set a way.

I like them ok for backgrounds and things. I tried to do a few full paintings and I think I worked it to death, LOL. Seemed like I was always using fixative to keep everything in its place. It's hard for me to get a lot of specific detail because it was hard to control the pastel.

That was my problem, so I gave up.

Well, I can believe that with me, but you are an accomplished artist. You should probably give it another try. I know I fascinated in Las Vegas watching some good pastel portrait artists work. I was amazed because they made it look SO easy.

Thanks Greg. I need someone to show me how to apply them correctly - like a beginner's workshop. I have used oil pastels before and had no problems, but soft chalk pastels are way different.
I know, its amazing how some pastel artists can make their works so photo-realistic, especially the wildlife artists using pastels. Blows my mind away. Some awesome talent out there.

Maybe you could take a class or something. They probably have something available that I could take here in Tulsa, if I wasn't so busy all the time, and broke. LOL

I hear you about the broke part. If I keep my eyes open the art store or one of the galleries might be holding a work shop in the near future. Right now nothing available.

They had a couple at the Art Guild in Muskogee a few years back and I wasn't real impressed. One was on Colored Pencil. They were using Crayola Colored Pencils and wanted everyone to use the same kind. Couldn't bring my prismas.

Wow! Crayola?? I am very surprised to hear that, as any professional artist, who takes color pencil seriously, usually uses Prismas, Lyra, Derwent or any of the professional brands out there. What was so special about Crayola?

I have no idea, except for the trainer didn't have much experience in CP. She was an acrylic artist. I really only learned one thing in the training, and that was how to use transfer paper. I had not used it before. I had always used a light box.

Ahh that makes sense as to why she picked Crayola. Probably the only brand she had on hand, or maybe she really didn't know there were professional brand/grades out there.

Thank you Kat! First time using color pencil on Strathmore Aquarius. Wasn't able to get a lot of layers of cp on it, but like how you don't have to pre-stretch it, and it doesn't buckle very much, when using the watercolor. I am going to try using it again, but use the other side of the paper this time. Just to see how the results come out.

i havent used their aquarius paper yet, only
Bristol boards from strathmore
but i know what you mean about
certain papers not accepting much pencil layering,
i love the smoothness of smooth Bristol board
but with some paintings when i want to paint in
backgrounds the paper wont hold much water or paint
so i resort using the very pricey Arches hotpress
paper takes every medium very well.

I haven't used Arches in a long time. I need to pick up some more. It's a good brand. I haven't worked on Bristol in a while. It doesn't hold up to the layers of color, in my opinion, like Stonehenge can. It's great paper for all pencil mediums I think though.

I think you would like it. It's very durable and excellent quality. It takes pen, ink, pencil, and watercolor pencil really well.

Actually I get mine usually at our local artstore. They sell them in the pads and sheets. Pad's usually come in 8x8, 9x12 and 11x14. They use to sell 8x10 pads and quit for some reason.
You might try Jerry's [link] or ASW [link] I am pretty sure one of those places will sell them in the pads.

I believe the pads come in white only. But the large sheets come in black, cream, white and an off white. Canson does seem to have the best variety of colored paper out there.
