I might have something:

Since Soulus is skilled in magic, he probably was going for something magic related and Polterghast tried to stop him because it wasn't going to work in the situation. Soulus ignores him since he knows he's so skilled in magic and when he tries to do it, it actually messes up badly and Soulus now realizes how much he was wrong and Polterghast just stands there, ticked off XD

My first thought is that he would put some type of sign on Soulus along the lines of "I was wrong" or something along those lines
