Description The lady of Shalott

This is my interpretation of Tennyson's poem. Rather than have her sadly resigned to her doom, I thought I would have her enjoying the view around her. Well, she had been shut away a long time and with no direct view of the world outside, so perhaps she would have derived some enjoyment from this final venture outdoors.
A2 size drawing (59.4 x 42 cms). All done in pencil.

no single images were used for the remaining animals, I used bits from several photos or invented parts.

Thank you Patrick. I think my ambition outdid my ability in this (re how I made her body too long). But it was fun to do, especially sneaking in as many animals as possible

CaroleHumphreys In reply to SapphierShadows [2012-03-17 23:00:47 +0000 UTC]

I had to go back and read my comments to check that, I took between 100-150 hours over several months

I admit there often comes a time towards the end, when I can feel so fed up and want to rush the finish so I can start something new, but then there's a danger I might mess things up if I do

Very beautiful! Stunning work on the Lady and her craft, especially her dress; the work on the gown's trim and her belt detail is truly astonishing!! The shadowing in the background (the trees along the bank of the river) are a bit too dark near the Lady. They draw your attention away from her; just a bit. The rendering of the animals, trees, and The Lady of Shalott is excellent. All in all, a very striking and stunning work.

Have you heard Loreena McKennitt's "The Lady of Shalott" on the album "The Visit"? In my opinion, it goes very well with your rendering!

I discovered this poem when I was in grade school, along with "The Highwayman" and "The Charge of the Light Brigade". All three of them have stayed with me for decades.

And so will this piece! Thank you very, very much!

PS What type of paper and pencil did you use? You have motivated me to set my table up and start drawing again. Thank you very much!

CaroleHumphreys In reply to FerdrikImperator [2012-02-05 21:29:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much. Someone else also mentioned Loreena McKennit's song, I'll have to have another listen.

I've used an A2 sized sheet of Bristol Board, it has a lovely brilliant white surface and can take a lot of punishment if you need to use an eraser. The pencils are Derwent Graphic Studio and come in a range of 9H-9B (I find the 2H-6H pencils are great for building up subtle shading on faces, etc., and I also use a clean tissue to smooth the graphite out at times).

Thank you!

There is a hobby lobby that carries Derwent. I don't think I ever went higher than 6H & 6B. I'll give them a go!

Take care & thanks again -- for your works & you're help!!

Awesome drawing! Your textures are really good. I just have to say that the background is overdetailed, my eyes keep getting "busy" and I cannot focus on the main subject (I guess the subject is the girl), also the depth of view gets confusing cause sometimes I can't say what is in the front and what is in the back, if you know what I mean.
This is gorgeous anyways, congratulations!
