Thank you! I was thinking of making a tutorial for mossy baskets as they're not difficult - just time consuming and fiddly. I've only got two other tutorials available at the moment. Let me know if you think it's a good idea. Cheers! Caroline

I think it's a smashing idea. I for one would be delighted to find out just how you do it. You know already that I am a huge fan of your work and I think it would be wonderful to learn from you. There are one or two people who do some very good tutorials on DA, unfortunately others who follow their lessons are frequently accused of copying the style of the originator. I have recently been trying to support one young girl who wanted to close her account because of such accusations. If you feel that you don't mind others trying, and I mean trying, to emulate your work then I think that we would all be grateful for your instruction.

That's a very very good point. I sell tutorials so that people can replicate my designs for fun at home, but don't allow people to recreate my exact designs and sell them at their own shops... I'll give it some thought. Thanks!

It's an interesting point isn't it. Do you sell your tutorials, in which case surely the purchaser has some built in rights, or do you do a freely available video like the cupcake one? In that case does the viewer have any rights. In so far as the cupcake one is concerned how do you prove that someone saw your exact video and not one of the many others out there. Another point is that, at the moment you are at the top of the pyramid, the acknowledged queen as it were. Would you gain more pleasure out of having people trying to emulate you, which is, of itself, a form of compliment or flattery,or do you wish to remain unique.
In retrospect that sounds terrible. Please try to see the sense and not necessarily the wording behind it.
Further, at what point does the "copying" become independent work? If I make a pumpkin am I copying your tutorial or am I making a pumpkin? I'd love to follow your thinking through. Note me if you wish to continue the discussion.

Hiya - all good questions. As the buyer of one of my tutorials you have the right to emulate my designs for fun as a personal hobby. You do not have the right to profit financially from my designs by making your own versions of my work and selling them. Just as no-one has the right to create Mickey Mouse toys and sell them (without reaching an agreement with Disney first).
My cupcake tutorial teaches how to make cupcakes. It's generic. People can make cupcakes the way I teach it and sell them - that's fine. I don't own the design of a basic generic cupcake. People can make pumpkins and sell them too - of course! However, my special Grinny Pumpkin Cauldrons are an unusual and stand-out design unique to my brand. It breaks copyright for someone to completely copy the exact design of my Grinny Pumpkin Cauldrons with the same face, same idea of a pumpkin carved into a cauldron with black tissue paper filling, same style as mine and then sell it at their own shop. Does this make sense? Caroline

Indeed it does. I guess I was just playing devils advocate and throwing out ideas which struck me as I read your comments. I hope you took it as it was meant and did not take offence. I'm always up for a good discussion. Keep well and keep smiling.

Oh goodness - no, of course I didn't take any offense. They were good questions and people often want to know what the deal is with tutorials and copyright. Stay in touch! C
