Alright, now, at twenty two years of age, I could just be old and out of the loop - the speeds at which society moves renders information obsolete almost before it’s been discovered – but would someone please, please, please explain to me the phenomenon of the “Wigger”? Also known as the “Wankster” (a compound form of the words “White Gangster”) and the “Wannabe”, these societal hybrids seem to be cropping up more and more frequently, and it leaves me, quite frankly, at a total loss.

With earbuds and ipods, Flex-fit caps and twenty pairs of Adidas, upper-middle class white kids are attempting to identify with ‘thug life’.  Maybe it’s something in the water, maybe it’s sheer lack of creativity, maybe it’s rebellion against perceived oppression, I don’t know.  What I do know, and I hate to break it to all you ‘homies’ out there, is that if you’ve got money to burn turning your picture-taking-text-producing cell phone into a video-recording-wifi-supporting-mp3-playing cell phone, you don’t know jack about what it means to be ‘oppressed’.  If you’d like to know, ask Rosa Parks, or Cesar Chavez, or Leonard Peltier. I’m sure they’d be only too happy to share.

Black people, really, you should be offended by this.  The average African-American in today’s society has no idea what their cultural and traditional heritage truly is; slavery pretty much saw to that.  So, okay, coming up with a set of social norms and dress codes (whether it causes you to walk around with your pants around your knees or not), I can understand.  It’s been a long and difficult climb to where society is now, and there’s still a long, long way to go. And yet, here’s a bunch of honkeys coming in – okay, maybe daddy didn’t hug them enough, I’ll give them that – and putting on clothes that are three times too big, listening to rap music, and going, “Hey, I feel your pain.”

Wigger, please.  Pull your pants up, turn that cap around, and go watch a baseball game or something.  It’s the only sport you’ve got left, you might as well enjoy it while you can.

With that said, I want to make it clear that I’m not letting everyone else off the hook.

I don’t care what color your skin is, this goes for all you ‘bad-asses’ out there; do your homework.  I don’t mean that in the literal sense (though it would definitely be a place to start). What I mean, more directly, is this: know what you’re rebelling against. Have a purpose, be informed, and be educated.  You don’t like school? That’s really too bad. You are part of a very, very small percentage of humans who has had the opportunity to become formally educated placed in front of you. Understand that.  You are the ones who have the opportunity to honor those who have come before you; learn about the sacrifices they’ve made for you to be here, learn how to be seen as an equal in a world that is still struggling to understand what the word ‘equal’ even means.

Quit butchering the English language; no one will take you or your cause seriously until you can present yourself eloquently and with poise.  If you want to go home and ‘holla at yo’ bitches and yo’ hos’ when you’re done presenting your case, hey, cool, that’s your call.  It might serve you though, to learn the language well enough to have a choice.

Our country is incredible in a great many ways – the freedom of choice being one of the greatest – and yet there is still a phenomenal amount of work to be done.  Do yourselves, and everyone else, a favor; shape up.  Learn how to blend into the world in which you live; no one is asking you to change the truths of which you speak, but for God’s sake, speak it in a language that others can understand.
