Description
The young half-dragon poked his head around the corner of the hall, looking just long enough to catch sight of her. That was all it took to make his heart flutter and his cheeks to warm. As she glanced in his direction, he immediately straightened back up and pressed his back against the wall, not wanting her to catch him staring. However, it appeared that everybody else had noticed his strange behavior and were giving him a wide berth.

Thomas bit his lip and leaned his head back against the wall, closing his eyes as he did so. Being different from everyone was hard enough without coming to Sylvan several weeks after the school year had begun. Having the status of newbie did nothing to help him blend into the background.

"Hey, new kid!"

Thomas flinched at the voice and drew in a deep breath to steady himself as he turned to face threat.

"Y-yes?" the new kid stuttered, his legs trembling as the older boy stopped before him, his towering frame and large muscles intimidating Thomas.

"I don't believe you've been given a proper welcome to the home of trouble kids." The older boy cracked his knuckles and smiled, his hazel eyes focused on Thomas's trembling form.

"Don't," Thomas squeaked out as he scrunched down a little lower.

"What's the matter?" the boy asked as he leaned over Thomas. "Scared of big, bad Cobra? Afraid that you can't escape, can't fight back? Well yes, you can't. I'm going to beat you to a pulp, newbie."

There was silence for a moment as he stared at Thomas, studying the young boy's expression of terror. Then he grabbed the half-dragon by the shoulders and gave him a rough shake.

"What? You've got nothing to say, freak? Not going to tell me how much of a jerk I am? Not going to tell me a sob story of how I pick on others because of my insecurities? Not going to tell me how big of a loser I am?" He gave Thomas another shake, this one rougher than the first. "Huh? Why don't you answer me, freak?"

"I don't answer because I don't want to be right," Thomas mumbled, regretting the words as soon as he had spoken them.

"Why you little…" Cobra growled and moved to punch Thomas in the face, but then a hand wrapped around his wrist, stopping him.

Thomas slowly lifted his head, looking past the bully to see a boy several years older standing there. His kind brown eyes looked at Thomas for a moment, and then flickered over to the bully as he released the larger kid.

"Get lost," the rescuer growled. Immediately the bully fled the place, his eyes filled with fear. The older boy then turned back to Thomas. "You alright?"

"Y-yeah," Thomas replied in a shaky voice as he took boy's offered hand. "W-who are y-you?"

The boy grinned as he pulled Thomas upright. "You can call me Jason."
