I don't know if you feel the same way, but black animals are harder to photograph and get a good balance of lighting.

Yes! I found this to be exactly the case, this zoo has (or, had, this cub is gone now) two melanistic jaguars and out of the ton of shots I took, this was one of the only ones I was even remotely satisfied with. It just feels every time like I'm not getting enough detail :c I guess it just takes some practice and patience really, though I'm lacking in the patience xD thanks for the fav too btw :3

You're welcome! I've got a black house cat, and in most of my pictures of him, it either comes out washed out, or he's too dark so you can't see the texture of his fur.

Exactly! I have the same problem with most of my shots, I actually prefer for it to be slightly washed out (this one was a bit) so that I can tweak them in Photoshop to reveal the details, whereas if they're too dark it's really hard to make it go the other way and bring the detail back in :3.
