Interesting idea.
Strange to think that even Hannibal himself would have this expression then, he doesn't look smug or like he doesn't care.

He's probably not that smug deep down (in my interpretation at least), everyone has fears and those that try the hardest to hide them and bury them are probably the most vulnerable in a way.

Actually no hehe, if you read the books you find out that Hannibal has no deep fear whatsoever. There is a scene where he is captured by Mason Verger and he is chained and ready to be fed to pigs, yet he is calm and smug as always. His mood doesnt change because of situations. He also broke into someones house, and the guys dog was too afraid of hannibals presence to attack him.

In that case my version is quite toned down...I like it that way though xD
I haven't read the book as you've guessed, what do you mean by ready to be fed to pigs? They wouldn't attack someone like wolves now would they? Or did this Mason fellow plan to do something to him first... O.O

Hehe, basically this guy Mason was a pedophile who was one of Hannibals victims in the past. But Hannibal didnt kill him like he usually does, he drugged him and manipulated him into peeling his own skin off and feeding it to his dogs. Later in the years Mason wanted revenge, so he bought a bunch of wild boars, hogs actually, and captured Hannibal. He then planned to feed Hannibal to the boars as a revenge, but Hannibal didnt change his attitude when he was tied up and was facing a horrible death by being eaten alive by hogs. Mason told the tied up Hannibal how he is going to feed him to the boars, and then asked him ''you probably wish now, you would have fed the rest of me to the dogs'' and Hannibal responded very calmly and absolutely comfortable in the situation facing death ''No Mason, i much prefer you the way you are now''.

Later ofcourse Hannibal escaped, but the hogs still came after him, but rather then eating him they ignored him and walked past him attacking everyone else but him, because they senced no fear from him whatsoever.

Hope that paints the picture, my writhing is a bit bad because im really tired atm

It reminds me of the Joker and other Batman-esque villains in a way. Just curious, in the books is Hannibal portrayed as a vigilante in a way or does he just 'eat the rude'? What usually motivates him? In the series it seemed to be a blend of sinister curiosity, self-preservation, and petty spite.

In the books, atleast the ones series are going to follow (there are many versions of the same book) Hannibal has this style of living. I think he mentioned somewhere that its a higher standard of living, thats why he enjoys opera, nice dinner feasts, philosophy, art (especially italian palaces). He also sees himself completely different from other people, he plays games with people, but he still searches for someone who would be nice to have in the world.

In the books he first has Will and later Clarice Starling. He doesnt really want anything from them, he just tests them to see if they can endure. He says once, that the beautiful looks of Clarice dont make him excited or anything, but just pleased that such a beautiful figure exists (he doesnt want anything from her, he just enjoys her existance)

Basically Hannibal is one of the most complex characters ever portrayed in books or movies, and i think Mads is doing an amazing job in the series.

He sounds quite interesting indeed, I'm hoping to read the books at some point this summer. Thanks for the summaries by the way. Yeah I think Mads does an excellent job portraying a compelling character, he does not make him a melodramatic over-the-top sort of villain but someone you might see in both lights.

No problem hehe, and yea Hannibal isnt over the top villain. He has remarkable qualities, he truly dislikes rude people (ones who are unnecessary rude). He ones kills a guy, because he said to Clarice something disrespectful and then insulted her with some sexual topic.

But then there is ofcourse the whole eating people thing But yea, i would 100% recommend readin the books.
