Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Oh my goodness! A realistically drawn version of my favorite new starter with well thought out headcanon information? By the gods I love this piece already.

Much like most people, I love Pokémon. Their an essential piece of my childhood, their fun, and their cute. But what I really love it how some people can creatively draw them out in a realistic fashion and give a breif but interesting explination on how they think they pokémon survives. I haven't seen many of things like this but I'm sure their out there somewhere. But enough about my ramblings, lets talk about this piece right here.

The vision is great. A tree frog style works splendidly with the moist water starter of the next gen. also drawing each part the text talks about was a helpful and reasonable thing for the artist to do. 5 stars for Vision.

As far as originality goes, I'm a little torn. I'm sure other people have thought of or done this idea before, but so far this is the only example I've seen of this. I have to mark it down for being an idea that some other people must have done, but that still does make it bad. It's a brilliant idea with creativity and surprising amounts of logic. 4 stars for Originality.

The technique is also very nice. The life-like drawing and art style work perfectly with what one would think when told of a Pokémon Darwin Guide. I make it down by half a star for two reasons. One: they almost seem a little two well done for an on the fly drawing, and Two: I'm not sure if a real biology drawing like this would be colored in. Even so, this is hardly a problem at all. Hell, I wish that drawings in text books and adventure guides were more like this. It would be amazing if they could. 4 and a half stars for Technique.

As you might be able to guess by now, this had a big impact on me as a scientist and as a Pokémon fan. I was nodding my head and going "Wow~" when I was reading the information about the pokémon. I was geeking out when I saw it was of my favorite starter of the new generation. I just blows my mind that people can do stuff like this. An amazing piece of art from one of my favorite artists. I hoep other people feelt the same way. 5 points for Impact.

Thank you so much for your honest and open opinion. I was torn a bit too when I decided to add the detail I have with each of the Pokemon. I wanted to keep the sketches more... Field-like but, I also wanted something visually appealing. I have a lot of concept art (pencil/pen sketches) that I've done in concept but felt as an "art piece" I needed something more graphic.

I guess that would be a great technique to master. If I could really work on a water color style / color pencil feel, that might be a little more realistic. Either way, thank you for your time. I really do appreciate it.

No, thank you. You have no idea how much I love your concept. Hell, you have no idea how much I just love to review and Critique things. I love art and have (no kidding here) and inate sense of "reviewership"

To me it's just common sense as to what's good and what's bad. Your stuff is genuinely good and I love it dearly. Thank YOU for accepting my review of your art. It means a lot to me ^////^

Is this like the Spider wick field guide?

CasteelArt In reply to EclipseofPhoenix [2014-01-18 06:54:08 +0000 UTC]

I hadn't seen the Spiderwick Field Guide. It looks great. I suppose the similarities lie in that they are both "guides" of sorts. This guide is created by me with a fictional Professor and Trainers / Villain. The Pokemon are all drawn and based on real animals versus making the Pokemon "real". I try to keep some of the aspects of each Pokemon in terms of colors but do take certain liberties with size/height.

Hi, I just found all the field reports on Pokemon, and its remarkable, and I know you've heard this many times. But as I was browsing your works I realized you don't have any on how the Pokemon evolve... I was wondering if they just grew into the next evolution or if they glow and transform like they do in the shows and games. So if it isnt too much to ask if you could explain that a little, and i apologize if this sounds a little pushy.

I'll definitely take a look at that. I really haven't thought about it too much. I have touched on it a bit (Simi-sage etc) as when the Pokemon are "exposed" to the elemental stones but I do not go into detail about the actual process. It might make a great page.

Been watching your work for a while now, and I can't wait for the day all this gets published!! Any chance you've considered doing a ghost pokemon for one of these? Would be very interesting to see Duskull, or maybe even Spiritomb...

GnooroopoftheGerudo [2013-02-05 20:55:44 +0000 UTC]

I think you did a real solid job with these. It's tough to say how much will prove to be accurate until we get more information on the creature (for example, though we all think those things are bubbles, and they look like bubbles, and I'm sure Game Freak intended them to look like bubbles, they may turn out to be something else), but you kept things broad enough that it will probably all be all right in the end. The drawings themselves are delightful, and while the anatomically-correct tree-frog like design might not be appropriate for all frog pokémon, I would say it works pretty well for Froakie.

Nice job!

Wow, they seem so alive. Great work.

Again, am being mainstream and getting Fennekin but is also in part because someone else in my trio of traders called Froakie as I called Fennekin. Now I kinda want to play Froakie though....Hmmm, will ponder this. If Fennekin is a firefighter, maybe will choose Froakie anyway. What? Grass type? There is a grass type starter?! XP

CasteelArt In reply to Zassu-Kread [2013-02-05 15:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Chespin is getting NO love right now. They make the grass starters so... different? Either way, I'm still rocking Froakie and unless something changes like the evolutionary lines (in terms of how they look, which plays a HUGE factor in what people choose) Ill stick with it.

Zassu-Kread In reply to CasteelArt [2013-02-05 15:38:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, if they were just a little more obvious about WHAT it is and saved the brown color for a later evo, it may have been liked more. It just looks too much like a generic "cartoony" character too me.

Yeah, Froakie is pretty sweet. I hope his look stays with the "Benjamin Franklin" theme that people are claimin' he has. (I kinda see it but may be just influenced by them.)

Wohoo,updates!! And a season 6 pokémon,i wasn't expecting that!
Looks great, very realistic, i also like how you mix up some biology in the notes, makes it look even more pro.
Just hoping for more updates, can't wait to see how you'll do the legendaries.
(and i laugh everytime i think about how you'll draw pokemons like jynx...)

I am doing a lot of redrawing as well as designing new pages. Not only have I gotten better at using photoshop/painter, my tablet has allowed me greater detail in my drawings. Ones that I am not happy with currently, is Eevee, Whiscash, Victreebel, Miltank and Hippowdon. So, I am currently working on Fennekin with some re-draw concepts for those pages mentioned above.

LOL I get it. You are totally justified. I am hoping for a new type. Maybe "Light"? I am thinking that the fox will be Fire/Psychic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scorpio219 In reply to CasteelArt [2013-02-05 11:59:14 +0000 UTC]

they can't do light type. What previous pokemon will have their types changed? It would have to be Lantern, which would now be water light. I can't think of any other pokes that would have its typed changed so unless they release hella light types in this gen, there would be far to few of them. Also dark and steel where only made to counter Psychic, which had really no weaknesses in gen 1, the bugs all sucked compared to Alakazam who would sweep everything.

CasteelArt In reply to Scorpio219 [2013-02-05 15:27:25 +0000 UTC]

There were only 5 Pokemon that were Dark with the release of Gen II. 6 if you count Houndooms evolution. While I agree with the reasons that you stated for their release, my suggestion was just a thought really. It would be nice to see a new type of some sort. Something new with the game. However, with that being said, it would be very difficult to implement:
