Description My first IRay render.  Turned out pretty good, and I have a new video card coming tomorrow which I hope means it won't take 4 hours if I decide to re-render it.

So, there is a story behind this render, and it's one of the reasons I didn't postwork/stylize it to death after rendering.  My husband is a chess enthusiast, and I decided a while back that when 3D printing over at DAZ becomes truly customizable I will print him a chess set of individual pieces I design.

This is the second in that series, though technically the first one, The White Queen, is currently too detailed and my system cannot handle rendering it (come on new 4GB video card).

There was almost no touch-up on this one, which is rare for me.  She had a little bit of poke through on her hair and the displacement on her front right arm (the one without the tattoo) was a little too strong, but those were the only "fixes" applied...The egg was actually rendered in scene exactly how it appears, the texture was created by me using Zummerfish's dragon scales brushes .

Created in DAZ Studio 4.8
Rendered in IRay
Postwork in Photoshop CS5 with Nik Tools

Model: Genesis 2, custom shape
Skin: Modern Muses Nera (converted from V4)
Egg texture: Zummerfish's dragon scales brushes , Simply Seamless by Winterbrose and CrazyBump.

Hope you enjoy!
Eden

Wow! You're making chess pieces too! Cool! (Sorry, I'm a chess enthusiast too, and I even started my own Chess initiative, to see more 3D Chess related art.)

Love her face expression and the light is set perfectly. Beautiful work.

I think he would be really happy with that.

Would you mind if I feature your chess works in my Chess journal (fav.me/d7xp7pn )?

Sorry for the delayed response, I haven't been online for a bit.  I would be honored if you wanted to add my picture your journal.

Thank you again.

Very nice and a fantastic idea with the chess pieces. I can't wait for 3D printing and it's consumables to become really affordable to the masses, so that I can get it.

I would recommend you definitely re-render this scene and don't make any changes. It will give you a great idea of the speed increase. The perfect benchmark test.

What card are you getting?
You mention 4GB, so is it one of the GTX 900 range. I got the GTX 970 a short while ago (before IRay) partly because it had better OpenCL support for Reality. Only to find out that yes, the renders were quicker but they lacked the detail. So far every IRay render has at least matched my best with Reality, even test renders. I am very impressed with it and it is extremely quick in comparison with the right card. 20mins finished instead of 12 hours unfinished and looking much better.

Oh, and in regards to a previous conversation we had, with IRay we have no need for Octane now.

Thanks!

Sadly, it's not the 900 series, but still vastly superior to my previous card. Got a GeForce GT 740 superclocked, 4GB GDDR5 (all of which means stuff about Cudas and things but I'm sick, and can't quite remember it all right now).

The benchmark test shows significant improvement.  My system has one i7 core, 16 GB of RAM and the above card.

Renders don't run at the snap of a finger, but the above took about an 1 1/2 hours to re-render, and the quality was just as good.  It had previously taken about 4 1/2 hours to render in IRay with my old card - so, it roughly took 1/3 of the time.  Totally worth the $100 it cost me.

I didn't try rendering this one in Reality, I haven't bothered with Reality at all since IRay was released.  However, Reality renders of the same size (1754 x 2480) usually ran for at least 9 hours until I decided it looked "good enough" that I could clean it up with postwork, somewhere between 1,200 and 2,500 samples.  The above had 5k samples.  I don't think I'm going to bother trying Octane at this point.  IRay is such a huge improvement for me, I don't really feel I need an "upgrade" at the moment.

I'm kinda under the weather and coffee deprived, so I hope this all makes sense.

Thanks again. Hope you're well!

I have an i7 (older but overclocked) and 16gb as well. I decided to get the GTX 970 because I already had a GTX 660 and the improvements weren't enough between the two (this is all before IRay was a thing). I figured if I'm going to be spending money I may as well get something to last and the GTX 970 was the best bang for buck that I could find.

That's a nice card and not too pricey at $100. That's about what I sold my GTX 660 for.
And I didn't mean to re-render in Reality anyway, I meant do another one in IRay, so all is good.
A lot of the time differences will depend on the scene anyway. As you know, lighting, reflection, refraction, SSS etc can all add to the time. No card(s) render at the snap of a finger, not even the top ones in SLI. But an hour or two (watch a film or TV) and finished is far better than 12+ hours and unfinished.

Speed was the main reason i wanted Octane but now I don't need it either. IRay is a perfect substitute. I can even get SSS working how I want it for the first time ever. At least you can see why I wanted it before IRay came into play.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

I agree, this piece is exquisite.  The light skin and the slight glow of the dragony egg are fantastic.
The end result is pale, slight and I love it!

Thank you so much!   I really appreciate it.  I really wanted her skin to stand out, but I didn't want it be overwhelming.

I'm really glad you like it!
