Character’s relationships

1. Character’s name: Jenko Shepard
Character’s relationship: Enemy to neutral relationship. Same as the “main” male Riley, she is the child of Valeriy Makarov and Miranda Shepard. Valeriy killed Miranda then left and Griffin was pulled out of her body. Out of rage, Jenko stomped on Griffin, attempting to kill her for being Valeriy’s daughter but she survived due to her high durability. Because of this, Griffin was taken in by Kilik Jenkins and Jenko did not see her again for a long time since Kilik kept her from him. Years later, Jenko thought she was sweet but part of him still had a hard time bonding with her because she reminded him too much of her mother and he remembered who her father was. By the time Griffin was nine years old, she and Jenko were on somewhat good terms, but eventually Valeriy kidnapped Griffin and she never saw Jenko again. Despite everything, Jenko wanted to help Kilik get Griffin back, but they never succeeded and were killed by Valeriy and his team.

2. Character’s name: Kilik Jenkins
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s adoptive father. Griffin calls herself “Riley Jenkins” due to Kilik raising her instead of Jenko Shepard, who Kilik kept her away from for a long time. Griffin loved Kilik like a father, and Sara like a sister. Even though she was Valeriy Makarov’s daughter, Kilik still cared for her and wanted to give her a chance not to grow up to be like her father. But after Valeriy Makarov kidnapped Griffin, she and Kilik never saw each other again. Kilik tried everything to find her and get her back, but he never did. It only got him killed. As Valeriy had Griffin, she held onto hope that Kilik would save her but he never came, and overtime her hope faded. For a while she found some comfort sitting there remembering being back at home with Kilik and Sara. The whole time she was with Valeriy and his team, she always remembered having a father and a sister who loved her. But eventually there came a point where she forgot their names.

3. Character’s name: Valeriy Makarov
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s father and enemy. When Valeriy found out about Griffin and learned she was his daughter, he managed to kidnap her and keep her with him and his team at their warehouse in California. Valeriy’s team built and dealt weapons and apophis with their allies, as well as helped Valeriy in his movement. Valeriy wanted Griffin to help them, but she kept refusing and wanting to go back home so they kept her in the warehouse. Her bedroom was a small concrete room that she stayed in throughout a majority of her time with them. Griffin could tell what they were doing was wrong, and even said it to them and tried to stop them but Valeriy responded by hitting her and lecturing her over why they do the things they do.

In 1955 when Griffin was twelve, Valeriy forced Griffin to take the apophis, which led to her gaining two retractable claws in each hand. The whole time, she felt the bones in her hands being rearranged and the claws tearing through her skin when they first came out, which was all terribly painful for her. Griffin does not have a rapid healing factor ability so holes in her hands are formed from her claws. She nearly bled out the first time they came out, making Valeriy have to treat her but also feel the need to cut off portions of her skin around each claw so there was no skin left to cut through as they came out.

Afterwards, the first thing Griffin did when she saw Valeriy as they were both in her room was try to attack him, but she failed since Valeriy was much bigger and had super durability. He beat her and had Noelle Casey burn her as both a punishment and a warning to stop trying to escape and help them. Ever since, Griffin did what they told her out of fear that she will be burned again, even killing an adversary of Valeriy that he captured and brought to her. In 1957, Valeriy was killed by other forerunners that stood against him, but his team kept Griffin with them and kept fighting for the same cause.

Griffin despised Valeriy for forcing the apophis into her, keeping her with him, and the things he forced her to do. She grew to spend a lot of time imagining herself killing him, therefore she was upset that she was not the one who did it when she heard someone killed him. Valeriy and his team are the reason she is very jumpy and flinches from peoples’ movements near her. She hardly talks to people and she finds it hard to trust anybody. She has trouble finding the right words when she talks to most people because she gets worried when she feels she said the wrong thing. Most of the time when she hears someone’s opinion different than hers, she is quiet and reluctant to say how she feels. Even after Valeriy’s death, his influence badly affected her, and it took her a long time to find someone who actually showed care for her.

4. Character’s name: Raul Lynch, Nikita Antonov, Noelle Casey, & Shawn Gregory
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s enemies. These four, all forerunners, were Valeriy Makarov’s team Griffin was stuck living with, and each of them had their own abilities. Raul had heat vision and super speed, Noelle had natural pyrokinesis and did not feel the need to use the apophis, Nikita had telekinesis, and Shawn had regeneration and the ability to transmute matter, transforming anything and anyone into something different. After Valeriy died, the four still kept Griffin around for their own gains.

One time Raul caught Griffin trying to escape and easily stopped her with his speed. He was the biggest watch to make sure she could not escape, and he became the reason she is afraid of speedsters. She spent a lot of time waiting for a good moment to attack him by surprise, even tried once to kill him but it did not work well for her. Nikita sometimes used Griffin to take his anger out on, randomly coming in to beat her or yell at her or both. Ever since, she became anxious and brought her guard up when she heard someone walking around outside a room she was in.

Noelle burned Griffin as punishment for trying to kill Valeriy back when she gained her claws, and often threatened that she would do it again if Griffin disobeyed her. She sometimes formed fire in her own hands to scare Griffin. Noelle enjoyed tormenting her with this. When Griffin was around adult age, she was pushed around to the point where she snapped and punched Noelle but it led to Noelle burning a portion of her face.

One of Shawn’s favorite things to do with his transmutation ability was turning his enemies into mice and keeping them in jars in his room so he could do whatever he wanted with them. The fact that he could do that horrified Griffin, and she always tried to keep her distance from him as much as she could because she was worried he would do that to her. He threatened to transform her a few times if she did not obey him. He never considered actually doing it but he knew she was scared of him so he took advantage of it and made her listen to him by saying he would.

Overtime Griffin slowly trained herself to fight when she was alone. She carefully read the others’ movements, looking out for spots that were open. She figured what parts on the body were most effective to hit, mostly from paying attention to where they hit her. The day in the year 2018 that Griffin finally escaped, it was only her, Raul, and Nikita at the warehouse. She managed to set up a way to take Raul by surprise and kill him and Nikita and escape, then she was on the run ever since. She was on her own for a while. She was always keeping a lookout because she knew Noelle and Shawn were looking for her.

When she reached Los Angeles, the new unknown environment was confusing and scary for her so she mostly hid in alleyways or under bridges because she was not used to seeing people everywhere. But her actions, mainly killing a gang that went after her, drew attention from authorities and she ran from them. She had a rough life in her universe, being on the run from everybody and finding it hard to trust anyone.

Because of Valeriy’s team, Griffin has a negative view on superpowers. She thinks they should not exist, even forerunners should not have their special abilities. She has pyrophobia because of Noelle, and she tries to avoid fire completely. When she sees it she starts panicking and her heartbeat increases. She hated and feared the whole team, and what kept her motivated was holding onto hope that she would break herself out one day. No matter how long it took.

5. Character’s name: Zach Bijou
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s partner. Zach Bijou is a fugitive who Griffin met and partnered with in order to survive. As Zach grew up, his parents mostly did not care what he did and failed to discipline him correctly, making him grow up to be entitled and reckless. He eventually became an associate of Valhalla Futuristics for a short time, and underwent a procedure that implanted retractable metal blades in his wrists. Zach went by the nickname “Savant” because of his fighting and tactical skills. Eventually, he decided to cut out his tracker and leave even though the organization’s CEO Roman Wheeler did not respond to that well and had people hunt him down.

While on the run, Zach eventually met Griffin, who was scared of him at first but then saved him when she saw Wheeler’s soldiers attacking him later. The two decided to stay together and survive. However, Griffin grew to dislike him because of his comments towards her. For example how quick he pointed out her burns and said she looked like hell. He never apologized for it and usually got fed up with her making a big deal over the comments he made.

Despite them partnering up to survive together, they were in a toxic relationship. Since he was someone she was sure would not hurt her, she told him about Valeriy and his team holding her at their warehouse and abusing her. But then he started making jokes about it which discouraged her from opening up to people. A lot of small comments he made from time to time angered her but she kept it inside for a long time. She was worried about what was going to happen if she lashed out at him over it.

However, his nickname “Savant” made her start going by the nickname “Griffin”. She heard before that griffins were associated with power and grace so she took a liking to it. One day she found an MP3 player and took a liking to music, partly because it helped calm her down. “Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora became her favorite song. It helped her feel better because of its upbeat tone and lyrics about a carefree lifestyle. Just having music playing in the background helps because she cannot stand when it is completely silent around her.

Griffin never let Zach use the MP3 player, and sometimes he tried to take it just to tease her. Zach was annoyed by her because she barely spoke to him and sometimes ignored him when she listened to music. He got annoyed when she had panic attacks, which one time screwed the two over and he had to get them out of the situation himself. Her listening to music and trying to relax after stressing out had him rolling his eyes or scoffing. Despite the two disliking each other, they were both afraid of separating because they relied on each other for survival.

6. Character’s name: Davion Winters
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s friend. In 2022, Davion had a situation where he traveled into different universes the RAA did not intend anybody to travel into, including Griffin’s. Not too long after entering, he saw a robbed store and heard about Griffin and Savant. After seeing what they looked like, Davion eventually managed to find the trailer where they were living. Griffin was caught off guard by his appearance because in her universe, Davion was a celebrity who she described as annoying. He originally went there to turn them in, but then he saw how scared Griffin was of him. She and Zach knew he had super speed due to him suddenly appearing in their trailer so she started panicking.

Even though Davion saw something in them and wanted to help, Zach thought he did not turn them in yet because he was taunting them due to his super speed and he could take them down in not even a second. Zach asked how long until Davion would bring them in, which scared Griffin and she tried to take him by surprise like she did to Raul. When that did not work, she cowered. But Davion did his best to convince her that he was not going to hurt them.

Davion was the first major person in Griffin’s life since Kilik and Sara who was nice to her. Even while she acted negatively towards him, he did his best to be patient with and help her. For a while Davion did not know she was the female counterpart of Riley Shepard, because of how different they were. Zach told Davion about her abusers even though it angered her. But it all made Davion sympathize with her and want to help her get away from this mess she was put into. But she never truly realized how much he cared for her until he eventually saved her from Renegade. Before this, Davion found old footage of her and the captors from the warehouse she grew up in which he found sickening and motivated him to find and help her even more. Valeriy was in a few of the videos, and he mentioned in one of them that Griffin was his daughter. Based on nobody mentioning Riley Shepard in this universe, Davion now became sure that Griffin was Riley’s female counterpart.

When Davion saved Griffin, she realized that he really did want to help her. During their journey, the two and Zach were stuck in a conflict with the RAA and a number of other threats from alternate universes. And while Griffin did not trust Davion, again she teamed up with him because she felt she had no choice. But she realized when he saved her that he actually cared for her and she has been pushing him away. It was the first time she cried in front of somebody and did not seem to mind it. At that moment he hugged her. It was the first time anybody showed affection to her in a long time, and since then she knew he was no threat to her at all. He was her best friend.

When the two do casual public activities, Davion often looks out for her to make sure there is no trouble that starts either by her acting up, or people causing her trouble. He does the best that he could to help her feel comfortable when they are out in public. But Griffin knows that Davion is also depressed, and she understands that he hates being treated like a weapon over his super speed. They both agree no one should have super speed because of how dangerous it is. Sometimes they talk about their issues and Griffin knows she can talk to him about anything without being made fun of. When Griffin eventually learns she is Riley Shepard’s female counterpart, she finds it weird and part of her feels jealous that his life still seemed better than hers. She grows to hate being compared to him and she says that to Davion, which he understands.

7. Character’s name: Renegade
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s enemy. Renegade is Riley Shepard aka Paragon from a universe where he won the fight against Lili Shepard and the Light Watchers who were controlled by Oni. He then took the offensive and killed everybody he deemed threats. But eventually he lost sense of who he used to be and started killing everybody. His suit was upgraded overtime and he became nearly impossible to defeat. During his fight with Lili, his lower jaw was broken off and he was no longer able to speak. He never cared to make a new way to communicate, as he dedicated the rest of his existence to killing.

During Griffin, Davion and Zach’s conflict with the RAA, a rift accidentally opened into Renegade’s universe and he walked into the headquarters. He slaughtered a huge number of their agents, and he eventually found Davion’s group and tried to kill them too. While Davion, Zach and an agent that was helping them got away into different rifts, Griffin wound up through the same one as Renegade and was stranded in a universe with him. They were stuck in a universe where the worst that could happen with everybody happens, leading the world to be a huge dystopia. It was also a new world for Renegade to massacre.

Griffin was terrified of him. She saw him kill a team of superpowered RAA agents that tried to stop him so she figured she had no choice but to hide from him. While she was stuck in there, he had no choice but to hope that Davion and the others would find her. While she did not fully trust Davion at the time, she did not want to die from Renegade. She saw how terribly dysfunctional this universe was and it helped her appreciate her time with the others more. She did not want to die there.

The RAA chief refused to send agents in to get Griffin back because she was afraid of Renegade and she assumed Griffin would resist them. So Griffin was stuck until Davion’s team eventually found her. In the scenario, it would have been impossible to save her if Davion did not have his super speed. After getting her back, Davion went back in to try and stop Renegade mainly by putting him back in his own universe.

After that, Griffin still thought back on it from time to time for a while and she worried about what would happen if Davion never saved her. But she knew she should not worry about that and kept finding distractions. Davion figured out who Renegade’s true identity was due to meeting an RAA agent counterpart of Riley Shepard with the same kind of armor. In the near future Davion told Griffin about it, making her uneasy but he felt like she deserved to know. She wondered if the “main” Riley Shepard was ever like that and Davion said no, not remembering Riley killing him with the armor in an erased timeline.

8. Character’s name: Peter Erickson
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s friend. Peter Erickson aka Shinobi is a hitman who was sent by the mob boss Eric King to kill Griffin eventually after she began living alone in Laniakea. Peter knew one of the Light Watchers she helped in World Legion and did not want to hurt her, so he went to her home to warn her and offer to help get her out of the situation. Griffin was upset upon hearing the news. She thought she did not have to worry about being attacked anymore because she lived in a new universe where nobody knew her. She did not trust Peter at first, but as he explained himself overtime she reluctantly agreed to let him help.

Despite his business and appearance, Peter is actually patient and does his best to be nice with people. He is not afraid to express himself. For example, he geeks out over Griffin’s necromium sword when he sees it for the first time. Because of this, Griffin could not tell for a while whether Peter was really a good person with good intentions or he was just insane. But overtime as the two got to know each other better, she was able to tolerate him and they grew to be close friends.

9. Character’s name: Vivian Rearick
Character’s relationship: Griffin’s friend. During the conflict with the Red Legion, Vivian met Griffin, who said almost nothing to her at the time. Vivian could tell something was wrong with her but she did not want to risk starting a bad reaction from her. But the two fought together and Vivian complimented Griffin a few times which made Griffin see her friendly demeanor and take a liking to her. After the Red Legion conflict, Griffin became more open and shared her story with Vivian. Being able to share this felt relieving but also stressful because part of Griffin still felt worried about being made fun of, and because she felt uncomfortable in general talking about her experiences. She also did not want to have Vivian feel bad for her, but at the same time she thought she deserved to know. Vivian was patient and treated Griffin with nothing but respect. She assured her that she was always open if Griffin needed something, and Griffin grew to find Vivian approachable and comforting to be around.
